The Japanese invasion of China during the Second Sino-Japanese war has left a strong legacy of hate and disgust among many Chinese today. Much of the atrocities committed by the Japanese are now known to most historians, but by far, the most despicable and forgotten act against humanity committed by the Imperial Japanese government was its covert biochemical weapons program. Euphemistically labelled as the Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification Department of the Imperial Japanese Army, the Japanese conducted a wide range of cruel and inhumane experiments on prisoners who were often innocent. Under the leadership of Dr. Shiro Isshi, the department subjected 3,000-250,000 innocent men, women, and children to cruel experiments and medical procedures that were carried out by the brightest medical students and staff that Imperial Japan had to offer. In a bid to develop its own germ warfare capability, the government of Imperial Japan resorted to incredibly depraved and inhumane methods of experimentation, like infecting prisoners with virulent strains of anthrax, plague, cholera, and other diseases. These prisoners were often subject to excruciating vivisections without the use of anaesthetics.

Tragic Story, Poor Narration

What did you love best about Unit 731?

The history and detail of Unit 731 is first rate.

What didn’t you like about Nicole Dahlstrom’s performance?

Ms. Dahlstrom's recorded has a hollow sound to it indicating poor recording equipment. That is a bit distracting. What is VERY DISTRACTING is the many mispronounced words, most often Cholera. Cholera has no syllables emphasized. However, Ms. Dahlstrom pronounces it with an emphasis on the first syllable, i.e., KOH-lair-ah. Very distracting. Other words too.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes.

Such a horrible atrocity, important to remember

It's impossibly difficult to understand how something like this ever happened. But it's beyond important to think and focus on how and why it happened after reading. A short read worth your time.

Excellent Overview

Narration: Clear and well paced. However, cholera is pronounced "kau her uh," not "koh let uh."

Content: Important documentation of the Japanese Imperial Army's medical unit carrying out horrible medical experiments rivaling Nazi Germany's.

Highly recommended. As with the Nazi holocaust, people must become aware of and never forget the Japanese holocaust.

The WW2 Corruption

How Germany, the USA, Japan, and Russia all worked in tandem to hide Unit 731 is not surprising.

Great informative book. the recording was terrible

I really enjoyed the books but sounded like it was recorded in a closet with a cassette player from the u0s. the audio was so low I had to almost max out the stereo volume.

As much as this book should make you uncomfortable and may even traumatize some. I feel it should be required reading

So low ball and low rent she/he couldn't even get the grammar right. And I am no stickler for grammar. A Terrible post modern interpretation of what terrible and horrific events occurred. If you're in the cult of social justice this bullshit was written for you.

Recorded in a bathroom.

This is the worst recording quality. Narrator and editor should get out of the audio book business. Volume is inconsistent and you can easily hear when sections are spliced together. I found myself focusing so heavily on how poorly produced this was that I doubt I will remember the content.
