Publisher's summary

The Master and Margarita is one of the most famous and best-selling Russian novels of the 20th century, despite its surreal environment of talking cats, Satan, and mysterious happenings. Naxos AudioBooks presents this careful abridgement of a new translation in an imaginative reading by the charismatic Julian Rhind-Tutt. With War and Peace and Crime and Punishment among the Naxos AudioBooks best-sellers, this too promises to be a front title.

Critic reviews

"Bulgakov’s satire of the greed and corruption of Soviet authorities illustrates the redemptive nature of art and faith, and Julian Rhind-Tutt’s superb interpretation does the classic full justice. With a dramatic flair and a deep, multilayered voice, he pulls off a host of fantastical characters including Professor Woland (Satan) and several of his associates, Pontius Pilate and Jesus Christ, witches and madmen and a variety of early 20th-century Moscow literary and theater types." Masterful indeed.

Vividly full imagery and precise narration all coalescing into a fantastical ending. Very unexpected. Bulgakov a true master.

Definitely the best Russian novel

What made the experience of listening to The Master and Margarita the most enjoyable?

The extraordinary mixture of stories and characters in way similar to F. Kafka style of writing full of several parallel worlds, yet realistic and well managed to keep the reader focused and curious.

Very vivid and amazing writing style

Had to read the first half from the beginning and then all became clear. I listened to the long version of this book with the same narrator. This short version was better for understanding what’s going on

Bloody well done!!!

Incredible story. Hadn’t read Master and Margarita for nearly 30 years. The narrator adds so much beautiful depth to the story and characters. Really loved every bit of inflection … can’t say enough good things about it.

A charming perspective of the devil...

Vocalist is quite good, story is even better. A book that plays with static perspectives and old narratives. In a way it’s “The last temptation of Christ...” but depicting the devil... but with a fictional/non-biblical setting and it does add a layer into one storyline there as well. If you’re curious and appreciate challenging your own perspective, I think you’ll find yourself enchanted.
