Publisher's summary

The definitive book on the hunt to find the most ruthless serial killer in Los Angeles' history, told by the fearless reporter who broke the story.

In 2008, Christine Pelisek broke the story of a terrifying serial killer who went unchecked in Los Angeles for decades, killing the most vulnerable women in one South Central neighborhood. In her cover article for LA Weekly, Christine dubbed him "The Grim Sleeper" for his long break between murders. The killer preyed on a community devastated by crime and drugs and left behind a trail of bodies - all women of color, all murdered in a similar fashion, and all discarded in the alleys of Los Angeles.

The case of the Grim Sleeper is unforgettably singular. But it also tells a wider story about homicide investigations in areas beset by poverty, gang violence, and despair; about how a serial killer could continue his grisly work for two decades in part due to society's lack of concern for his chosen victims; and about the power and tenacity of those women's families and the detectives who refused to let the case go cold.

No one knows this story better than Christine Pelisek, the reporter who followed it for over 10 years, and has written the definitive book on the capture of one of America's most ruthless serial killers. Based on extensive interviews, reportage, and information never released to the public, The Grim Sleeper captures the long, bumpy road to justice in one of the most startling true crime stories of our generation.

Chilling but important story

If you love true crime, you will love this. The pacing and narrator were both good. Definitely worth a credit.

Unbelievable <br />

Loved it! It's hard to believe someone could do all these crimes and get away with it for so long. I do believe if the victims were white we would have heard much more.

Grim, indeed. (In a good way)

If you could sum up The Grim Sleeper in three words, what would they be?

That. Dude. Sucks.

Who was your favorite character and why?

This true crime story is quite different from others I've read. I'd say the main character is almost the South Central community as a whole and that was very fascinating. I also liked that the author focused so much on the victims, rather than just the killer.

What about Inger Tudor’s performance did you like?

She didn't over-act with different characters' voices, which is something that can bother me while listening to some audiobooks.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

I think this would be a bit too intense for one sitting.

Any additional comments?

If you're on the fence, I say give it a listen. It took them forever to catch this guy and although there are still a lot of unanswered questions (like WHY), it's good to hear about these families finally getting justice.

Riveting Story, brilliant narration!

It was a tough read because of the heart rending subject matter. Inger Tudor did a fantastic job of bringing all of the people involved to life!

Well worth the listen.

I enjoyed the book. Listening made exercise go quickly. Sometimes we do not know where little things come from that affect either history or our understanding of it, nor do we know all the people involved.

Usually I shy away from female readers, a matter of voice for me. But I am not sorry I bought this one.

A serial killer and a community

This was a great listen and not what I expected exactly. I thought it was going to be a gritty true crime and although it is very focused on the murder cases, it really delves into the multiple victims and their lives. It was refreshing to read something that was so deeply aware of the community in which it takes place. This was as much about social justice as it was about a serial killer and that was a unique, refreshing take for me. I'd like to read/listen to more like this, but I'm not sure it exists!

Informative and well written

I've never read anything like this and didn't know what to expect. It was sad and depressing but in depth. On serial killer TV shows you get glimpses into the story but with this I felt like I was there on the hunt and in the courtroom. It's interesting to hear ALL the details and bts info. Was kind of like reading a very long news article with all the story instead of clippings. I enjoyed it but think I'll go back to fiction.

To long

Could be at least half as long if the author hadn't included so much useless information. I don't need every detail about every person alive in the area the crimes occurred in. It takes forever for the book to even get remotely interesting, then goes straight downhill from there. Just stick to the helpful information. The author clearly just added boring crap to an already boring book.

Some say it’s long winded but it’s important

I see a lot of reviews scoffing at the fact that she goes into everything that happens in that time period but it sets up how wrapped up everyone was in the own day to day that this case got swept under the rug. While important or trivial stuff was happening, women were being preyed upon. I recommend this for those that really want to know the depths of this case and not the lifetime shock value

Important

This was a great true crime book that really puts a focus on the victims and their family. Reading through I felt like I knew the girls at least to an extent. A very important read to remember that their lives mattered too
