Publisher's summary

In this gritty New York Times best-seller, the true story of a crooked deal between the FBI and the Irish Mob is exposed. By providing a penetrating look into the mean streets of mid-1970s South Boston, the author shows how two kids from the neighborhood cross paths again years later, ending in the biggest informant scandal in FBI history.

Best book I have read in a while

Amazingly good I loved the book. The account of whitey bulger was scary that it is actually a true story.

Informative and Well Done

Where does Black Mass rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Above average

Who was your favorite character and why?

Whitey because he was what every lover of organized crime books wants to read about

What about John Rubinstein and Christopher Evan Welch ’s performance did you like?

It was well done and well read. That seems like something all audio books have, but it is NOT.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Nothing exreme. Just well done.

Interesting for true crime fans

I was interested in learning more about Bulger and his FBI relationship and this book delivers. The story drops a few important nuggets late in the book/epiloge regarding his FBI handler that could have been better developed. I did not care for 'accents' added to the quotes which leads to low review of the performance.

An epic telling of crime history.

An epic telling of crime history, both on the parts of the established criminals and on the part of the FBI agents that protected Bulger and made a nice living doing so,

an enjoyable listen

I am from Boston and knew a lot of people from "Southie". We all know the story , lived and breathed it several times over!! Buttttt.... This book has provided me with details I hadn't heard of before!! It is well written and wonderfully narrated. I have read the book "Whitey" which was amazing. But I wanted to learn more details of the true alliance between the FBI and Bulger, that made the monster become the biggest crime lord in Boston. My chin dropped and mouth covered countless times during my listen. Couldn't believe what I became to know as fact regarding his climb and reign of power. His brother Billy wasn't an angel as most of us thought. Bulger had so many pieces of the puzzle how could he not rise as he did. Whether you are familiar with his story or just want to learn for the first time. This is the book to listen to!! Be patient in the beginning there is a slow pace to warm up to but after a bit you are captured by the narrator and the very well written true story. Enjoy!
