Publisher's summary

Adelina Amouteru is a survivor of the blood plague: marked by a jagged scar, snow-white hair, and lashes. Cast out by her family, Adelina has finally found a place to belong within the secret society of Young Elites. To some, the Elites are heroes, here to save innocents in desperate situations. But to the Inquisition Axis, the white-robed soldiers of Kenettra, they are monsters with demonic powers who must be brought to justice. As Adelina learns more about this perilous world where politics and magic clash, she soon realizes that her own powers may be in danger of bringing on an era of panic such as the world has never seen.

Critic reviews

“By permitting her characters some grand failures, she raises the stakes in the best way possible.... There is clearly more to know, and I look forward to it. This is a world worth revisiting.” (The New York Times Book Review)

“Lu pivots from the ‘coming of age via romance’ formula to pry apart the many emotions that pass under the rubric of love… There’s nothing easy here, for Adelina or readers - there are no safe places where the pressures of betrayal, death threats, and rejection aren’t felt.”(Publishers Weekly, starred review)

“Readers should prepare to be captivated - and to look forward to a continuation of the Young Elites series.” (Booklist, starred review)

After finishing Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass series, it’s understandable if you have a bit of a listening hangover. This seven-book fantasy series features a fan favorite strong female lead in 18-year-old assassin Celaena Sardothien, and Maas’s writing has been described as "scary good." After all of the build up to the conclusion, hearing the last word of the final audiobook probably felt bittersweet. These epic fantasy series will be your next best listen.

Enjoyed it.

I love hearing about all the stands of energy that make up the universe.
This book was enjoyable but not as great as her Legend series.

Read it, don’t listen to it

Story was good, when you read it yourself. The reader Carla Corvo, was terrible. She made the main character sound so stupid and high school-y. The main character sounds “like- I’m-so-sure” almost valley girl accent. When I read the book myself it was much better.

it was just good

3.5 stars
I liked following a character that is not a hero and is unlike most of the generic young adult charters. The sorry was smooth and fun to follow.

The only complain I have is that this book felt like as if the author did not put full heart in the series, it's a feeling of going down one part of roller-coaster hill hoping that the momentum will carry up to the next hill but it doesn't fully, so it felt through the book, the characters could of had more momentum, it almost feels like the author had a due date and didn't put full potential in the characters and story.. either way it was good quick entertaining read, nothing other worldly

Good story but ....

The story itself is pretty good. However, the author's voice is somewhat immature in my opinion and the performance of the reader emphasizes it, so I was a bit disappointed overall.

Fantasy, powers & strong female lead!

I love Marie Lu!

Adelina is my kind of character... A misfit with extraordinary powers, overcoming her weaknesses and finding herself in the process. Thrilling fight scenes... Real passion and romance... Intrigue. Can't wait to start book 2!

Very enjoyable

Very interesting . Best suited for lovers of the Hunger Games series. In between fantasy and thriller. One of the best books I’ve ever read!
