Siddhartha joins the ascetics, visits Gotama, embraces his earthly desires, and finally communes with nature, all in an attempt to attain Nirvana.

Not for the faint of heart
Mary Maclane is pretty insufferable. She is pretentious, self-absorbed and immature. I admit that I was occasionally entertained but overall this book was a slog.
