Publisher's summary

Willa Knight: Dweller. Slave. Non-magical being.

In Minatsol, being a dweller means that you are literally no better than dirt. In fact, dirt might actually be more useful than Willa. Her life will be one of servitude to the sols, the magic-blessed beings who could one day be chosen to become gods.

At least her outer village is far removed from the cities of the sols, and she won't ever be forced to present herself to them... Until one small mistake changes everything, and Willa is awarded a position to serve at Blesswood, the top sol academy in the world - a position that she definitely did not earn.

Under the sudden, watchful eye of the gods, she will be tasked to serve the Abcurse brothers, five sols built of arrogance, perfection, and power. They are almost gods themselves, and under their service, she is either going to end up sentenced to death, or else they are going to ruin her so badly that she will wish for it.

Either way, she is in trouble.

This is a full novel, 90,000 words. Book one of five in the Curse of the Gods Series

Alert! Alert! This is a "reverse harem" series!

This is a light, humorous fantasy novel that in tone, style, and subject matter reads like a YA. The Audible description gives you no idea that as the series goes on it turns into a "reverse harem" sexual fantasy where all of the impossibly buff and handsome brothers are inexplicably obsessed with the main character and have to agree to "share" her bedroom favors. And the author seems to be a lot more invested in the harem and the sex scenes than the world-building and plot.

If that's your idea of a good time, have at it. But if you're more interested in the plot than the sex fantasy, or if you don't think jealousy among men is the sexiest possible thing, give it a pass.

There should be a blaring alert on all YA

I love fantasy. I despise YA. I don’t know why all YA heroines are all narcissistic sociopaths. This book is a prime example of a heroine who is a self-obsessed truly awful individual whom we are supposed to believe everyone falls instantly in love with. Throughout the book she cause near constant harm to others and shows no remorse or ownership for her her actions. Instead shrugging her shoulder and blanking her “curse”.

It is glaringly obviously where this storyline is going and how her “curse” will turn out to be a “gift”. But I am still left wondering about all the poor dwellers who have had to clean up her messes and suffered injuries because of her.

I feel like this type of YA tells girls it is ok to be totally self-obsessed and cruel because boys and everyone will think it is cute. It’s not. It’s really not.

WHAT WAS THAT!!!!

Ok first off I NEVER give things 5 stars. If I like it it gets 3. If I REALLY like it it gets 4. To get 5 stars I have to have loved it so much that the moment it's over I want to go replay it. THIS book is one of those rare finds. Honestly I just finished reading 2 series that were both 6 books long and fairly dark and I wanted something based in a different world that would put me in a good mood. I nearly skipped this book until I saw how nearly all the reviewers noted how funny it was. So I caved.

All that said, I loved the book. I had me laughing so hard at times that my sides hurt. :). The authors find a nice balance between humour and realistic consequences. The one down side to this book is that it IS the first in the series which means that most of the book is focused on world building and character development. Also, there are a LOT of characters to meet and get to know and at times you have to be careful or they begin to blur together. But there is a story told fully here and it sets a great foundation for the future books. I can't wait to see where the authors take the story from here but in the mean time, I'll probably be replaying this one a LOT.

Good storytelling with a kinky side!

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. The storyline and voices were excellent. The main character seems to have been ripped off a comedy stage! She is very humorous with the associated insecurities you would expect from a young comedian. The relationships between the characters develop nicely with a very kinky undertone. One warning though -- if bad language makes you squeamish, you should probably skip this one (your loss though!)

the perspective was weird.

One minute she is believably 18. Then the next, I'm wondering if she's so naive that she's a child. I wouldn't recommend this story to anyone. The performance was good considering how bad the content was.

Least favorite of the 50 books this year

It took 3.5 hours of listening for anything interesting to happen. I don't care for the main character as she is supposed to be 18-years-old but comes across as an 11-year-old in mentality and actions. It ended abruptly with a "to be continued..." I spent more time judging this story than actually listening to it. Every time a character is described, the descriptions contradict each other immediately. For instance, something like (not a direct quote but you get the idea) "his eyes were light green, but you know, not like that neon green but a green that is more grey, but with more gold in it like a sunset, but still dark.." So frustrating! I am buying the next book just because I need some type of resolution and at least it will be something to listen to when I clean my house.

Simply WOW!

Okay I'm in love with the brothers. Jaymin and Jane are a powerful combination. The dynamic and chemistry between and and Willa is breathtaking, seriously I held my breath throughput the story. Oh my gods! I cannot wait for the rest of the series. The narrator was on point. Her style was very hypnotic; it definitely kept me inside the story. Made it really hard to put down the headphones 🎧. I hope the rest of the series gets released into audiobooks because I will be waiting...🤞💋

Strange, confusing, hilarious fun.

I don't...... understand..... what just happened????? I'm just... SO CONFUSED. This book was recommended to me by several different platforms. Goodreads, Bookbub, Amazon, Audible... And I finally threw in the towel just so I could stop seeing it everywhere. Plus, I was pretty intrigued by the Greek gods thing because I just haven't seen that a lot outside of the Percy Jackson books. I knew nothing about it and I definitely didn't know this was about a reverse harem, which is probably good because then I never would have picked it up if I had.

.... Okay I'm sorry, but this book is terrible. THERE. I SAID IT. Right about now you're looking at my star rating and thinking, four stars is terrible???? REALLY?? Look, I KNOW. Didn't I say that I was confused?? The story isn't that spectacular. There are tropes galore. Willa can be kind of dumb. Someone is always falling or yelling or bleeding. There's a love HEXAGON. But this book IS. SO. FUNNY. I laughed so much during this entire thing that it's blinding me. It seems like Trickery knows exactly how ridiculous it is and plays into it SUPER well. The banter and inner-monologues that happen are top-notch. And that scene between Willa and the servant Jeffrey had me in STITCHES y'all.

Plus, Vanessa Moyen does such a great job! Her voice for Willa is perfect and she has great comedic timing that really played well with this story.

FINAL WORD
This book is just plain fun. If you want a little bit of romance and a laugh, DEFINITELY try this. I'm both ashamed and proud to admit I'll totally be continuing on to the next book.

Addicting, funny, and original

Loved the brothers and the main character. Loved her running dialogue with herself. Honestly hilarious. Listened to this book at the end of a road trip and my family didn't get me back until I finished the book since the Drive ended before the book 😂

Only downside is that I am discovering this book 1 with no more available and I'm pouting about it. Wish audible had a way to earmark a series anticipating more books 📚

Quirky, Fun, and Smart

Just when I said I was done with YA, this light hearted gem falls into my lap (on recommendations list). After the first few mintues I was concerned I might have wasted one of my credits on a silly children's books disguised as Fantasy. Luckily, I decided to give this clumsy unlucky Dweller a few more chapters.

This novel really surprised me. I didn't even realize I was hooked. I'm not big on comedy but Willa's smart remarks and bad luck made me giggle a few times. The story behind the goofy falls and awkward nudity is actually quite interesting. Five brothers with different powers take Willa into their clique. She has to learn each of them and they have to adjust having a fragile human girl around.

My only negative criticism of the book is the ending. It just ends. Not in a draw dropping cliff hanger, but more like the editor just chopped half of the last chapter off to save pages.

I'm glad I found this book. If you are looking for a funny fantasty novel without the overplayed love triangle then you'll enjoy this journey into the world of Sols and Dwellers.
