Publisher's summary

This 1872 sequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland finds Carroll's inquisitive heroine in a fantastic land where everything is reversed. Whereas the first book has the deck of cards as a theme, this book is loosely based on a game of chess, played on a giant chessboard with fields for squares.

Alice encounters talking flowers, madcap kings and queens, and strange mythological characters when she becomes a pawn in a bizarre chess game involving Humpty Dumpty, Tweedledum and Tweedledee, and other amusing nursery-rhyme characters.

"By any reckoning...[one of the] most original works of fiction to emerge from that strange and original time known as Victorian England." ( Guardian)

Not as good as the first

Not sure what the hoopla is about this one. I’d probably get it if i listend to it again (the performance was grand), but i don’t have an interest in the story.

Awesome

I enjoyed listening to this book. I’ve read this book when I was a kid in elementary and it’s still as wonderful as the first time I read it.

Quite odd

One of the oddest things I've had the pleasure of listening too. It is like being thrashed about from time to time. I can see why they took liberties with all the movies they made. He was quite an odd fellow this one. Overall I enjoyed the story.

Fantastic narration

I love the writings and puns. This narrator made me laugh out loud! I’d listen to more by this performer.

Great

Not quite as good as Adventures in Wonderland, but just as endearing. I enjoyed the extra bits of Poetry in this volume, especially thr explanations of Jabberwocky in the text. Overall definitely some of the most imaginative children's literature I've read. Seems to have come directly from a child's mind.

didn't like it

I still don't get why people go so crazy for Alice in wonderland. I listened to Alice and through the looking glass back to back and i still can't figure out if Lewis Carroll is a genius or some crazy tripping addict. This story makes a little more sense then Alice but it's still a incoherent jumble of random events and characters. The narration wasn't bad, although some characters sounded a bit alike (i listened to Alice as narrated by Scarlett Johansson who in my opinion did a better job) and at times it was read a little fast.
