Publisher's Summary

Ever since his dad got rich from an invention and his family moved to a wealthy neighborhood on Long Island, Tony Miglione's life has been turned upside down. For starters, there's his new friend Joel, who shoplifts. Then there's Joel's 16-year-old sister, Lisa, who gets undressed every night without pulling down her shades. And there's Grandma, who won't come down from her bedroom. On top of all his other worries, Tony has questions about growing up - Why couldn't things have stayed the same?

Critic Reviews

"Tony Miglione is perfectly happy in Jersey City, and looking forward to going to junior high with his friends, so he is not at all pleased when he learns his father's invention has made the family rich....With a new school and burgeoning sexual yearnings to cope with, Tony is a troubled boy. Judy Blume does a fine job of seeing all this from a boy's viewpoint." ( Saturday Review)

A Favorite

I read this book in 6th grade and it's always stuck with me. The audiobook did it much justice. A great Judy Blume classic brought to life.

The perfect teen-angst drama

Outstanding. Narration ten out of ten. Always a classic favorite, Judy Blume impresses me yet again.

The boy's side of the story

My daughter and I have been doing lots of driving lately so we decided to give a talking book a try. I was looking for "Are you there God, it's me Margaret?" which I read when I was about her age but the only Judy Blume title I could find was "Then Again, Maybe I Won't". I guess it's the male companion to "Are you ..." and I kind of feel I read it at some stage in my early adolescence.
I enjoyed the story and in the most part the story telling. I found some of the other voices jarring - especially the female characters. I absolutely hated the music over the opening paragraphs- it made it very hard to catch the story (though maybe I was just having a bad day!)
All in all our attention was held - my daughter was shocked by references to wet dreams and spying on girls. Blume writes so well for kids about kids and even with the references to Vietnam War the story still translates well for kids in 2017.
