Publisher's Summary

The Broken Bridge is the story of Ginny Howard, who lives with her widowed father in a little village in North Wales. Her mother came from Haiti, and Ginny’s half-African heritage marks her out from most of her friends; but equally important to her is the knowledge that her mother was an artist, and Ginny, too, has talents in that field. Over the course of one summer she makes some devastating discoveries about her family, which make her rethink everything she thought she was sure of.

What the Critics Say

‘The emotional truths that Pullman reveals are so heartfelt and raw that they hardly read like fiction.’ (Publishers Weekly)

Not exactly what I expected from Philip Pullman

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Possibly recommend to an unsophisticated teenage girl. The main character has a challenging childhood dealing with death, loss and loneliness in her life.

What does Miriam Margolyes bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Great Welsh accents. She was brilliant.

Any additional comments?

I was surprised (spoiler alert!) that the main mother characters in the story are pretty dastardly, uncaring or just plain mean and nasty. The father figures, on the other hand, are caring, loving, at worst benign. By putting what might be considered more typical male behavior (desertion, violence) into the mother figures makes the story uncomfortable, and for me, a little unbelievable. Still I listened to the end. The mystery of the plot was well paced and had a satisfying conclusion.
