Publisher's summary

When thirteen-year-old Ronan Truelove’s seemingly ordinary mom snatches him from school, then sets off on a high speed car chase, Ronan is shocked. His quiet, nerdy dad has been kidnapped? And the kidnappers are after him, too?

His mom, he quickly learns, is anything but ordinary. In fact, she’s a member of an ancient order of knights, the Blood Guard, a sword-wielding secret society sworn to protect the Pure — thirty-six noble souls whose safety is crucial if the world as we know it is to survive.

Now all those after-school activities — gymnastics, judo, survival training — she made him take, make sense. For suddenly Ronan is swept up in a sometimes funny, sometimes scary, but always thrilling adventure — dashing from one danger to the next, using his wits to escape the Bend Sinister, a posse of evil doers with strange powers. Falling in with two unlikely companions, Greta, a scrappy, strong-willed girl he’s never much liked and Jack, a devil-may-care teenage pickpocket, Ronan is left with only his wits and his mom’s last words of advice: Trust no one.

That’s a lot for an ordinary kid to deal with. But then again, maybe Ronan’s not ordinary at all.

Thrilling from start to finish

I got this book to listen on commutes with my twelve year old. I'm so glad I did! It was phenomenal! Thrilling, exceptionally witty and enough tween attitude to keep my child on the edge of her seat. The narrator did an amazing job with the voices of each character and performed his parts in a very entertaining manner. We wound up finishing the story on our bluetooth speaker at home because we wanted to know what happened next! I can't wait to pick up the next in the series.

Overall good but needs some work.

5/5 but it does more performance and more generations and more story action and characters.

Action Packed.

An enjoyable story, action packed right from the start and never a dull moment. The story does have a some of the typical part that a young adult adventure tends to have. Specifically, how the parents are taken out of the picture and there is always a smart kid that knows so many unusual and random bits of knowledge, and the bad guy was a bit predictable. But despite that, the story break into an original concept and takes the listener for a wild ride. I look forward to the next book in the series. The narrator does an excellent job and the book is quite adventurous.
