Publisher's Summary

The astonishing, beautiful new story from the best-selling and Costa short-listed author of Time Travelling with a Hamster.
There are stories about people who want to live forever.
This is not one of those stories.
This is a story about someone who wants to stop....
Alfie Monk is like any other nearly teenage boy - except he's 1,000 years old and can remember the last Viking invasion of England.
Obviously no-one believes him.
So when everything Alfie knows and loves is destroyed in a fire, and the modern world comes crashing in, Alfie embarks on a mission to find friendship, acceptance and a different way to live...which means finding a way to make sure he will eventually die.

Great Book

Loved this book, especially as I live in the North East of England and was familiar with the different places mentioned. I also liked the historical aspects of it and felt it would bring history alive for a child. I thought both narrators were excellent and they made youu feel that you were there with them. I loved the humour, poignancy and emotion and would recommend it to children and adults alike.

I really enjoyed!!

I have seen this book everywhere and I have always thought it looks to young but finally my mother convinced me to listen to it and I’m so great full she did this book is one of my favourites!! I don’t really know what age group I would recommend for this book but I’m 13 and I really enjoyed it.😍 I think the thing that made this book stand out from all the other books I’ve read is that it’s about an 1,000 year old boy!! I love this book❤️❤️ hope other people enjoy it as much as I did!

Don't hesitate, get this book, read it to the kids

I bought this book on a wet, wintery Friday afternoon for my 11 year old daughter to start to read over the weekend. She was miserable with a head cold so on Friday night i started to read the book to her at her bedtime - an hour later I did not want to put it down - and she was loving it too! Over the course of the weekend we kept on going back to the book and we finished it together on Sunday night. It is a very clever story, well told and on the last page, we both cried happy tears.
It is a book suitable for both boys and girls and spans 1000 years, is about friendship, loss, belonging, hope and resilience. There is not one bit of the book I would change, and I thoroughly recommend it to any adult looking for a story that will draw any reader in and keep them hooked until the end. I hope you enjoy it as much as we did.
