Publisher's summary

Coretta Scott King award-winner and National Teacher of the Year, Sharon M. Draper uses a brilliant variety of styles and voices to tell this compelling first story of her Hazelwood High trilogy. The night that changes everything in Andy's life begins as a great time. His basketball team wins a big game, and he and his best friend have some cold brews stashed in the car, just waiting for the rolling party to begin. Nothing anyone can say or do afterwards will convince Andy that what happens next isn't his fault.

Thankful that my child didn’t read it!!

When school was about to start, I saw a reading list posted on our school board website. 9th graders could pick one of 3 books listed, if they chose. Well I made a huge mistake and bought the book, Tears of a Tiger, for my 14 year old to read. Thankfully she never got around to reading it!!
Last night, I stayed up reading the book myself, and I’m horrified that anyone would think that 14-15 year olds could handle such a read. Shockingly, the age level of this book is 12+.
Maybe I’m bothered so much by this book because teen suicide has impacted my family; or may it’s because the teen is judged so harshly for his decision, yet he had tried to reach out, but no one was available; or maybe it’s because the author is very misinformed about mental health; or maybe it’s the way that everyone forgave the teen for a fatal drinking and driving accident that he caused, but couldn’t forgive him for ending his own life due to his mental and emotional trauma; but whatever it is, I’m so thankful that my 14 year old, who has been so profoundly effected by suicide did not read this!!
Normally, I’d never say anything negative of informative reading materials for students, from any educator, but Tears of a Tiger, is definitely not a book that should be on any students reading list.
Parents, always be proactive, because what might be ok for one student, might greatly effect yours.

Light Praise Review

I have never read a novel that caused me to become so emotionally invested in it. This is a real life novel depicting real life situations that people, young and old, face on a daily basis. Wonderful, wonderful literature.

Very Symbolic

The narrator changes frequently, but I cried at the very end. The middle of the story was a little slow, though. Great book all in all!

powerful story, wrong category

this is not a sports story. also, the effect of multiple narrators disturbed me (particularly women doing male voices).

Wow!

The story and connection between the characters was very intriguing in my experience! I listened to this one with my 12 and 13 year old mentee’s and they absolutely loved it.
Forged by Fire! Another great one in this series here!

Depressing

This story should come with a warning for teens who struggle with depression. This book deals with teenage drinking, drunk driving, death, and suicide. These are very serious topics that need to be addressed in our society. However, this is not "light reading" for the summer.

Annoying readers

It’s a good book but have 5 or more different people reading the book to you is annoying and took away from the boos. If each reader was its own character in the book it world have been a lot better. But no they took turns reading chapters and their voice changing per character got you confused of which character they were reading. It should be one reader for the hole book or one reader per character through the whole book.
