Publisher's summary

"Think of it as a game, Jack. Play the game right and you might outlast the Nazis."

Caught up in Hitler's Final Solution to annihilate Europe's Jews, 15-year-old Jack Mandelbaum is torn from his family and thrown into the nightmarish world of the concentration camps. Here, simple existence is a constant struggle, and Jack must learn to live hour to hour, day to day. Despite intolerable conditions, he resolves not to hate his captors and vows to see his family again. But even with his strong will to survive, how long can Jack continue to play this life-and-death game?

Monotone performance

Narration is monotone and rigid. I couldn’t get through it. I can’t rate the story because the narration was so difficult to listen to.

Too many inconsistencies

The part of the story where he gets to the end of the war does not add up at all! There was no abundance of food in Germany after the war, nor anywhere in Europe for that matter!

Plus he gives the Russians way too much credit! They were no saviors or liberators! They were rapists and looters! They didn’t just give two random guys living in a vacated house free food and let them stay for free! They used the citizens in their sector for forced labor! You couldn’t just pick up one day and say “Hey I want to go to the US sector!” The Russians by that point resented the other allies and wouldn’t have allowed it!

Seems very fabricated!

Heart Touching

This was short. I can not endure much suffering of other, but this was enough to break my heart and know what others had gone through. It was well done. God help us all.

Succinct Survival Story

Interesting story of how one Jewish man endured the holocaust and lived to later tell of the experience. It is detailed enough to describe the food available in the concentration camps and to imagine initial interactions with Nazi soldiers. it is satisfying to know this man later immigrated to the United States and personally speaks at the beginning of the recording.

Outstanding!

Such a well written account of a truly inspirational man. Jack’s courage and hard work, friendship, and refusal to give into hatred are imperative lessons for life. This story resonates with me so powerfully…a little more each time I read it. Thank you!

horrifying!

there is no limit to the human capacity for evil. every White supremacist Neo-Nazi should be forced to listen to this book and others like it. perhaps they will come to terms with The Sickness and Evil of their ideologies. people of good conscience need to rise up to confront such evil and our society, because such a thing can happen here.

A hard but good and needed book

It is a hard book but so good and needed. It does not water down the brutality and horror of everything that he faced; however, it does not go into lengthy gory details either.

Another incredible first hand account…

I believe everyone in the world should read a first hand account of someone that lived through WWII. I have read many accounts, from many camps and perspectives and it is just astounding to see what people will do to each other. It opens your eyes and brings you in to the real emotion and makes it more personal more then any history book with names and dates. This one is going on my list of recommendations if anyone were to ask.
