Publisher's summary

From New York Times bestselling author Cinda Williams Chima, this is a thrilling story of the unfathomable costs of war, the allure of dark magic, and two principled and conflicted characters drawn together despite everything they stand to lose.

Alyssa ana’Raisa, the reluctant princess heir to the Gray Wolf throne of the Fells, feels more comfortable striking with a sword than maneuvering at court. After a brush with death, Lyss goes on the offensive, meaning to end the war that has raged her whole life. If her gamble doesn’t pay off, she could lose her queendom before she even ascends to the throne.

Across enemy lines in Arden, young rising star Captain Halston Matelon is being sent on ever more dangerous assignments. Between the terrifying rumors of witches and wolfish warriors to the north and his cruel king at home, Hal is caught in an impossible game of life and death.

Lyss and Hal’s intricately linked fates become inseparable when they fall under the shadow of a new enemy—a force that threatens to extinguish the last rays of hope in the Shattered Realms.

Drags on, not much happens.

The Seven Realms series is one of my ALL-TIME favorite book series. I've read them multiple times. I started the Shattered Realms series with high hopes, and Flamecaster was pretty good (still not as good as the original series). However, I'm mid-way through Shadowcaster now and I'm bored as heck. I don't know if it's because the timeline is the same as Flamecaster, just different characters, but it's been slow from the get-go. I am not attached or invested in the characters like I was in Flamecaster. I cannot listen to an audio book without actively paying attention to the story-line. I listen to hear the story, not just for background noise. This being said, I've missed whole chapters of Shadowcaster because I'm only paying half of my attention to the story. Too bad, hopefully the next one is better.

Great :)

Great continuation of the story. Chima is an excellent author & has an exciting conglomeration of characters. Excellent new characters to love. A new Hero & Heroine to love. A new group of Mages to learn about. New villians to hate. Only bad part is that I have to wait another year for more of the atory & two years to the ending. Cinda please write faster LOL

so many new characters

I don't like it's been 17 chapters and we haven't revisited a single person from the last book

great book but...

Chima is amazing of course. Despite all that, I really hate that this book's timeline starts before Flamecasters end. I love Jenna and Hal but I don't enjoy how this whole series focuses on different characters and the timeline restarts for every book. I want to just skip to the end of the series to find out how one specific character died. Chima makes the story interesting anyway but it's not for me. I'm going to see the series through but I would really prefer the character arcs and books occur in chronological order, my patience is not cut out for this.

What happened to Ash and his dragon lady love

I thought I was gonna get to hear more about them but instead I end up with a bunch of new people I don’t particularly care about and I’m just supposed to accept that you aren’t going back to them at all but truly just switching to other people and I have to learn about them through another’s if at all? Like whaaaaaaaat the heck

A Story Goes South

A protagonist at once too young for her role, too flighty and inconsistent for credibility, and too willing to have sex with a stranger. In short, a perfect book for eight year-old credulous boys.
