Publisher's summary

Zar Evans is not your typical high school senior; in fact, she is anything by normal. Dressing to the trendiest Goth fashion, Zar wears nothing but black from head to toe. Not that this warrants unwanted attention, but she is also top in her class and is looking at a full academic scholarship to Iowa State in the fall.

Loudon Clarke is an all-star athlete. He plays three varsity sports and has the world in his hands. Except for one thing; Loudon is failing majority of his subjects, and he is about to be suspended from the basketball team risking his athletic scholarship.

Zar and Loudon would normally never cross paths, until these two are brought together when Zar's brother proposes to Loudon's sister. With an upcoming wedding and a lot of planning, Zar and Loudon are stuck with one another regardless of their differences.

Zar has hidden behind the pain she deals with on a daily basis for years. Loudon has never had to feel pain nor the ignorance of his peers. Can opposites really bring these two together, or will they be pulled even further apart?

Only one thing is for sure, it is impossible to fight the connection of pierced love when one is willing to change for happiness.

So realistic!

Zar is a senior who has been tormented for years by her classmates. She has panic attacks that seem to come out of nowhere, but they are debilitating and so embarrassing for a high school senior who doesn't entirely understand what's happening.  She's called a freak for something she can't control and no one has ever asked her if they can help. Zar does set herself off with her recognizable Goth appearance and she's comfortable wearing black because it allows her to hide herself. Her life changes when she walks into a pizza parlor one evening and spots the most gorgeous boy she's ever seen. His green eyes seem to pierce right into her. She sees him again when there's a party for her brothers engagement and, there he is, the brother of the bride. Loudon knew from the first time he saw her that she was special and he lets her know right away that he wants to be with her. Zar fights her attraction because she's terrified that she's going to have an attack and everybody will know her secret. She agonized constantly about the fear of losing her family's love. I felt she was a little bit over the top with her behavior, but then I've never walked in her shoes. There is no better book boyfriend than Loudon. He not only protected her from the bullies, but he showed her that she was capable of love. It's a sweet YA romance that ended with a perfect epilogue.
Hannah Pralle did an excellent job with the narration. Her depiction of each character fit what I imagined them to be and her voice was laced with emotion.

"The beau" and "the freak"

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, I really enjoyed this book. The fact that I could identify with Zar and what she's went through made the story all the more real for me. I think the author did a good job in bringing the horrors of what bullying can do to a person to life and that anxiety is real. I liked that the author had no problem touching on subjects that people do not want to talk about most of the time such as bullying and social anxiety.
I loved Loudon. Against all odds, he stuck around for "the freak" seeing her for what she really was, a beautiful girl, that yes, might have some issues, but nonetheless he couldn't help his attraction for her. He helped Zar feel beautiful again and see the beauty in life and what it's like to be loved.
I truly loved this book

Who was your favorite character and why?

Loudon was my favorite character because throughout the story we learn that it's not the outside or the appearance of a person that matters, but what's on the inside.

Have you listened to any of Hannah Pralle’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

I have not, but I truly enjoyed her way of narrating.
