Publisher's summary

Things are changing in the Gaither household. After soaking up a "power to the people" mind-set over the summer, Delphine, Vonetta, and Fern return to Brooklyn with a newfound streak of independence. Pa has a girlfriend. Uncle Darnell is home from Vietnam, but he's not the same. And a new singing group called the Jackson Five has the girls seeing stars.

But the one thing that doesn't change? Big Ma still expects Delphine to keep everything together. That's even harder now that her sisters refuse to be bossed around, and now that Pa's girlfriend voices her own opinions about things. Through letters, Delphine confides in her mother, who reminds her not to grow up too fast. To be eleven while she can.

An outstanding successor to the Newbery Honor Book One Crazy Summer, P.S. Be Eleven stands on its own as a moving, funny story of three sisters growing up amid the radical change of the 1960s, beautifully written by the inimitable Rita Williams-Garcia.

One of the best books I've ever read.

I like how the mom liked her kids. The pa had a girlfriend and got married. It took a while for them to get together with Dalphane and Pa's wife.

Great!

I really enjoyed this sequel. It was uplifting and engaging. I can't wait to read it to my students. I know they will enjoy it just as much as I did. A must read if you've already read One Crazy Summer. I'd love to see another book written to take the story even further.

Stuck Between Growing up and Being Grown

Three young girls, Delphine, Fern, & Vonnetta, are growing up during a time of racial resistance & solidarity. Delphine, the oldest, holds the responsibility of taking care of her two younger sisters; an impossible job for a 11 year old girl. You'll enjoy the lives and shenanigans of the three as well their family members.

Interesting Story with Courageous Young Protagonist

I love Delphine, her family and friends. They are fun and familiar and I find myself rooting for (most) of them.

Memories

It brought back childhood memories. The afros, bell bottom pants, the images of the Black Panthers and young people saying "right on" and "power to the people".

Another winner

This series so far is wonderful. Have truly been enjoying the girls grow and take shape in their own characters. Delphine, the oldest is coming into herself and so is Vonetta. I appreciate the real themes such as drugs abuse in families, the Vietnam War, blending of family, the first black congresswoman, a new teacher from Africa, and Cecile's letters to her daughters, as well the questions from children. I know I won't be disappointed with the next and final book in the series. Great book .
