Where Friendships Are Made Into Legend

If you are reading this review you have probably been immersed in the tight web where Infernal Devices weaves itself into Mortal Instruments. You have loved the incredibly outspoken and hysterically funny Magnus Bane in the Magnus Bane Chronicles. You know the magic Cassandra Clare has with words and ideas. She has turned her attention to the heroic and loyal character, Simon, in these Shadowhunter stories and her skill does not disappoint.

I was caught off guard by the power of this story. Mathew Fairchild made me laugh outright. Young James Carstaire made me cringe and tear up. Ragnor Fell made me love him for all of his bluff and gruff. Most of this short is written as a flashback or a story told by Katerina to Simon who is still adjusting to a life with limited memories. What better way for him to continue to find his way than to hear how the greats in the Shadowhunter world found theirs. Is there any better story than how a friendship began...especially if the friendship has unlikely roots? The brilliance in Clare's stories is that they are applicable, relevant, and deeply real. This story is about courage in the face of life changes that seem insurmountable and it is about taking personal risks. As an adult I still value insights along these lines and I find it immensely satisfying to glean these insights from an author with a keen sense of humor, a powerful sense of social justice, and a great talent in building characters who seem like real people. Thank you, Cassandra Clare, for continuing to wow me with your world.

Another great snippet about Simon

Jeez these are so good but over so fast! I need more!!! Assuming since this one was released on 06/01/15 and the new book series isn't out til 03/2016 that they will drag out the release of these short stories.

James Is the best! (Light spoilers about the Infernal Devices trilogy)

*if you have not read the infernal devices trilogy yet, do not read this book or this review if you do not want the story to be spoiled*

This is my favorite of the short stories from Tales from the Shadowhunter Academy. This story sheds light on Will and Tessa’s son James as he attends Shadowhunter Academy and struggles with some very unique problems of his own. I highly recommend this book, it is short but packed with information about the mysterious James Herondale and Matthew Fairchild relationship. Enjoy!

Bromance!

This book is seriously the very best of all the Tales from the Shadow Hunter Academy. The authors give us a glimpse of Shadow Hunter youth from centuries past and tell a tale so touching, you just can't help but love it. Nico Mirallegro is definitely the best narrator of all 10 stories as well... He needs to do more narration, great characterizations and emotional depth.
