Publisher's summary

Selected as one of the Young Adult Library Services Association’s 2019 Amazing Audiobooks for Young Adults!

“The Nate series by Tim Federle is a wonderful evocation of what it’s like to be a theater kid. Highly recommended.” (Lin-Manuel Miranda, star and creator of the musical Hamilton)

Third time’s a charm! Nate Foster returns home to Jankburg, Pennsylvania, to face his biggest challenge yet - high school - in this final novel in the Lambda Literary Award-winning Nate trilogy, which The New York Times calls “inspired and inspiring.”

When the news hits that E.T.: The Musical wasn’t nominated for a single Tony Award - not one! - the show closes, leaving Nate both out of luck and out of a job. And while Nate’s cast mates are eager to move on (the boy he understudies already landed a role on a TV show!), Nate knows it’s back to square one, also known as Jankburg, Pennsylvania. Where horror (read: high school) awaits.

Desperate to turn his life from flop to fabulous, Nate takes on a huge freshman English project with his BFF, Libby: He’s going to make a musical out of Charles Dickens’s Great Expectations. (What could possibly go...right?) But when Nate’s New York crush ghosts him, and his grades start to slip, he finds the only thing harder than being on Broadway is being a freshman - especially when you’ve got a secret you’re desperate to sing out about.

This magical conclusion to Tim Federle’s beloved Nate series is a love letter to theater kids young and not-so-young - and for anyone who ever wondered if they could truly go home again. Especially when doing so means facing everything you thought you’d left behind.

Critic reviews

"As both author and narrator, Tim Federle delivers a wholly satisfying conclusion to his funny, smart, heartwarming Nate series.... With a voice full of snark and longing, enthusiasm and confusion, Federle embodies Nate, making sure that WE understand him, too.... You'll want to give Nate, and Federle, a standing ovation." Another great story from Tim Federle

This is the third Nate story I've listened to. They keep getting better.
Not just because I'm more familiar with the story and the characters. Nate is growing as a person. More aware and more romantic. His understanding of life is getting deeper. I had a lot more trouble putting this book down than the other two.

And, yes, he's still clever and funny. And Tim is a great narrator.

As always...WONDERFUL!!!! TIM Federle has such a gift!

This is the third book I’ve read or listened to by TIM Federle. His stories about Nate are joyous and funny and moving and honest. He brings so much to the table. Nate’s love of theatre and all the wonderful theatre references. Nate’s coming of age and his realization he might be gay ( that’s the first book, by this one he is comfortable with it). His relationships with the people around him. TIM creates wonderful characters. And he delves into feelings. I wish I’d had these books around when I was a young boy listening to musicals and dreaming of spending my life doing them. At the same time I was realizing my heart flipped more when I noticed guys. I would have felt so much less worried about these things if these books had been around. I’d have realized I’m not alone. You’re doing great things Mr. Federle. Not only a great writer but you’re opening up peoples worlds and lives and making those lives easier for these young people. Thanks for the humor, the wit, the fun adventure and for showing kids it’s all just fine. Not always easy but it’s just life and we all deserve a crack at it.

Nice wrap up to the trilogy

The 3rd of 3 books all about Nate. This one sort of reminds me of "Glee'" meets Judy Blume in which Nate returns to his hometown high school and things don't go exactly as he expects. Old friends remain, new friends are made, and Nate begins adulting.
