Max fears that his family will disapprove of his friendship with Darla, a common girl from the village outside his uncle's fortress walls. That's why they meet secretly to read together from an old book that Darla found in a dusty room near the fortress laundry where she works. They read about a lost lake and feel adventurous when they slip out of the fortress to go swimming there; but the trouble begins when they find that, in the meantime, the fortress has been sealed and they can't get back in. It's lucky that they have the book with them, to guide them through the many dangers that await them on their way back home...or perhaps it is the book that is the source of their troubles. In the end, it is the power of the friendship that Darla and Max have forged and their courage that see them through a series of breathtaking adventures. Written by an award-winning author and his teenage son, this book is a light-hearted book for listeners of any age.

A Thrilling Adventure through Alternate Universes!
Barbara Benjamin-Creel did a fine job and gave every character a different voice.
This is a story written for teens, but I think it could be enjoyable for adults and younger kids too. Max is the over-protected son of royalty and Darla is the daughter of an uneducated working class family living in a medieval world. Their forbidden friendship takes them to strange new places where they meet many dangers and even stranger people.
The book is well done, but I'd have liked more detail in some places and maybe an epilogue as well. It's great that it was written by a father and son.
When's the sequel?

A Grand Adventure
Absolutely, especially my friends with children/teens. This was great storytelling by both the author and chosen narrator.
I'd have to say both Max and Darla. They were wonderful in spirit throughout the piece each holding the other up when situations seemed lost.
No, but I've added her to my favorites list. Her performance was fabulous. Really great storytelling.
I received a copy of this from the narrator in exchange for an unbiased review. Thank you!
