Publisher's summary

Sherlockian detective of the supernatural R. F. Jackaby and his intrepid assistant, Abigail Rook, search for their ghostly landlady Jenny Cavanaugh's murderer and fight their most fearsome foe yet in the highly anticipated third volume of this New York Times best-selling paranormal mystery series.

Jenny Cavanaugh, the ghostly landlord of 926 Augur Lane, has enlisted the services of her detective-agency tenants to solve a decade-old murder - her own. Abigail Rook and her eccentric employer, R. F. Jackaby, dive into the cold case, starting with a search for Jenny's fiancé, who went missing the night she died. But when a new gruesome murder closely mirrors the events of 10 years prior, Abigail and Jackaby realize that Jenny's case isn't so cold after all, and her killer may be far more dangerous than they suspected.

Fantasy and folklore mix with mad science as Abigail's race to unravel the mystery leads her across the cold cobblestones of 19th-century New England, down to the mythical underworld, and deep into her colleagues' grim histories to battle the most deadly foe she has ever faced.

Love this series- excellent narration by Nicola Barber

William Ritter has penned a fun, mysterious series in his Jackaby novels, and I’ve become a fan. Jackaby is quirky and rude without meaning to be, but well-meaning and with hidden depths that eventually are revealed in stories as we walk the path with him, and the other primary character, Abagail Rook. Brave, strong, impetuously driven towards adventure, Abagail drives the serious, along with their other housemate, Jenny. Bottom line, you’ll enjoy these fun reads.

Nicola Barber is superb. I don’t write a lot of reviews, but when I come across the exceptional, sometimes it just seems necessary to give thanks. Lately, it seems as if publishers have come to realize that when they’ve found a truly great narrator, they should maintain consistency in a series and retain the invaluable narrator in addition to the author.

I can only name a handful of my favorite narrators without looking it up, but Ms Barber has captured my heart (& ears).

In my mind, the very best narrators inhabit each and every character as distinct &. separate entities, & with unique vocal traits. Sadly, the very best are the ones who fade into the mind’s background because the reading is not being done by “ Ms or Mr X” but because they become the characters so completely. Female or male, young, old, or alien/paranormal being, Ms Barber exemplifies the very best of her craft and is the prefect compliment to Mr Ritter’s compelling storylines throughout the Jackaby series. Well done to both Mr Ritter & Ms Barber!

Great # 3

I’m off to get book 4 and I must say I’m a little sad it’s the last one … I’ve enjoyed all of the so far and recommend them to anyone who likes fantasy with a little mystery !
Oh ignore the review about this book having a “ woke” passage 🙄 firstly the book was written years before that stupid word even meant something.! Secondly , the person who wrote this particular review must be homophobic or something because the passage in the book ( that was about 3 mins total ) had a purpose behind it . It was about Jackabys ability of seeing past the normal of whatever anyone else sees. There is no political message of any kind .

Sherlock Holmes crossed with Harry Dresden

The above heading may be an over simplification, but that's the best way to quickly describe the spirit of the Jackaby books by William Ritter. I've enjoyed each of the books in this series so far, but Ghostly Echoes expands the mythology of these stories in new and exciting ways. This seems like a turning point for the series and Ritter does a great job of expanding the scope of this world without sacrificing the character development that makes these stories great. This was not what I was expecting from this book (but in a good way). Instead of a "case of the week" story, we get a intriguing peek behind the curtain of the larger Jackaby world that Ritter has created. Lots of fun, with great characters to boot.
For me, narration can make or break an audiobook and they have found the perfect performer to narrate the adventures of Abigail Rook, R. F. Jackaby and friends. Highly recommend for fans of Conan Doyle and Jim Butcher. Can't wait for the next story.

Probably the last one I will buy

In this 3rd novel I was completely caught off guard by the WOKE political message completely unnecessary to the plot thrown into the story. It was out of place & forced, so disappointed.

Little bit of Sherlock, little bit Supernatural

Any additional comments?

Another winner from Ritter! Loved the characters and as always love the tone and feel of the world and it's characters! Exciting and funny at the same time!

Thrilling ride every time!

Great story, well narrated. A cross between Scooby Doo, Sherlock Holmes and the Fantasy genre.

Beautiful narrative!!

One of the main reasons that I reached the third book in this series is the narrator, I didn't even bother with paper books anymore. She's very brilliant and brings life into each character. I might even buy different books that weren't on my list just because she's reading it.
There's alot going on in this story, and strong character growth, however I wasn't very impressed with the investigations and how everything unfolded. At one point it felt like a jumble of everything paranormal. I will still read(or rather listen to) the next book because we'll... You know why!
