Publisher's summary

Years before, a gateway opened between their world and ours. Sending one young woman through may be the key to survival for the kingdom of Fourline.

Strapped for cash, college student Natalie Barns agrees to take a job at a costume shop. Sure, Estos - her classmate who works in the shop - is a little odd, but Nat needs the money for her tuition.

Then she stumbles through the mysterious door behind the shop - and her entire universe transforms.

Discovering there's far more to Estos than she ever imagined, Nat gets swept up in an adventure to save his homeland, an incredible world filled with decaying magic, deadly creatures, and a noble resistance of exiled warriors battling dark forces. As she struggles with her role in an epic conflict and wrestles with her growing affection for a young rebel, Soris, Nat quickly learns that nothing may go as planned...and her biggest challenge may be surviving long enough to make it home.

Simply written young adult/teen book

Many of the characters were lack luster and the majority of the story was pretty boring. It became more interesting towards the end.

Good story, fast paced and very enjoyable.

The story is interesting, well written and entertaining although the main character succeeds more by luck than intelligent action. I'm looking forward to reading the second book in the trilogy!

Enjoyed the story and will continue

I enjoyed the story and will continue on to the next installment. The ending was too... soap or 30s radio serial for me: "Tune in next week for the next thrilling installment" rather than wrapping up the story and letting the next book being an entirely new adventure. It brought down the overall achievement of the story so far.

That would be an editorial criticism however.

The author kept me interested and engaged.

Lastly, I'm starting to despair of the narration of many audio books. Too many times I inwardly groaned or cringed at the performance, accent, or interpretation of intent.

Loved the characters and the fantasy of the story. Can't wait to hear book 2.

Great Book!

This book is great. It kept me interested the whole time. I listened to all 3 back to back. I would listen to 3 more if they are made.

Definitely worth your time

I really enjoyed this book. It kept me enthralled the entire read. It started a bit oddly and I had to go back and delisted to it but the rest of it was fantastic. Headed off to listen to the next one.

Not a fan of the narrator

I really wanted so much to adore this book, but I had a problem with the narration. She seemed to over enunciate each word, which felt very forced to me. The tone of her voice was lovely, but both her so called accents, and the crispness of her "t"s and other letters was off-putting to me, especially since a posh sounding voice didn't match with the cash strapped college student main character. Beyond that, the story was fun. It would be a nice read for younger teens or those who enjoy magical YA novels. I don't think I'd continue this series if this is the narrator for the rest though.

A Surprisingly Different Fantasy World novel

So the idea that a young person from our world enters another, magical world is not new. Fourline delivers on that standard, but it is refreshingly unique.
This book feels like a blend of Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time" series and Madeline L'Engle's "A Wrinkle in Time" without feeling as if it copied either series. Appropriate for adults AND young adults.

Glad to find a new series to enjoy! Hope there will be more!

Great read!

This is a good book. It hooks you in from the first and takes you along until the end. I found myself not wanting to stop the story. It is clean (no language and nothing steamy). I've heard others write about "world building" but never really realized what that fully meant until this book. If you like adventure books this is for you.
