Publisher's Summary

In 2022, the United States commissioned a group of scientists to experiment with genetic mutations. Their goal was to create a serum that would alter the human genetic code, making the subject stronger and faster. But not only had they created a super serum, but also an airborne virus. By 2025, 75 percent of the world's population had perished. Ally is an Ordinary - a human who is immune to the virus. She lives in a settlement outside the City with her mother and twin brother, but lately it doesn't seem to be enough. She is wrestling between being with her family and volunteering to move to the City, where she can work for the Exceptionals. Luke is an Exceptional, a superior human being. His ancestors were infected with the virus and lived through it, leaving their super human strength and special abilities to him. He has never given much thought to Ordinarys, despite pressure from his father to choose one from the ORC. But all of that changes when he meets Ally....

Similar to the others

It was similar to the other dystopian trilogies.
I just personally wasn't thrilled with the readers voice. If you liked divergent you will like this.

Sweet Romance; Intense Struggles

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Great characters, believable dystopian world and situation. Good narration. The relationships and romance were sweet and the struggles intense. The story had me rooting for Luke and Ally from the beginning. (I've read a review of book #2, Rogue, that mentions a "love triangle" and that really threw me since I have actually left a few series unfinished because I just couldn't stand the whole triangle thing. Why can't more stories/books just be about people with faithful, consistent hearts?) I also appreciated the fact that, while there was a part of the storyline that might not be appropriate for very young teens, the romance was handled sweetly.

Anyway, I did love this book and finished it in a day....have already bought book 2, and hope 3 will be out in the very near future.

Being a "Philly girl" myself, I appreciated the author's background too :)
