Publisher's summary

When Matt closed Raven's Gate, an ancient portal to the world of evil, he thought the trouble was over. But sinister forces are still hot on Matt's trail and will stop at nothing to destroy him.

Somehow five children from across the globe must join forces, as the threat of the Old Ones still looms near. Now Matt and the second of the five, Pedro - who speaks no English - must find the second gate in the lost city of the Incas before the evil star rises.

Entertaining audio

I read someones review that stated this book was written for a young person. I agree, and further define that it was probably written with a pre teen, Caucasian, male in mind, but I loved it and can't wait to read the third book. Sometimes the twists are predictable possibly because I am an older person and sometimes a surprise. Sometimes I am yelling at the boy ("..listen to them!!!", but I remind myself that he is only 14 and some valuable development slowed at 8 (death of higher class parents) so keep that in mind and you will enjoy it too.

The Horowitz we know and love

This is what Horowitz does so well -- fiction in a predictable genre, a little formulaic but always enjoyable. (Anyway, it probably doesn't seem formulaic to the young people who are the book's main audience. Everything is new to them.) These are great books for reluctant readers: perfect for about 5th-8th grade. And you can always rely on Simon Prebble to read it well.

Excellent sequel

This was a good follow up - the story developed some more depth, and got more interesting. Good listen. Fantastic narration. The nice thing about the narration is that it is done in such a way as to keep the focus on the story, and not the narrator's voice, but with a wide variety of voices that fit the characters.

Evil Star

Another riveting part of The Five. I love the narration, every one stands separately, all believable. It was brilliant to bring Inca history and have them awaiting the five. Terrified where this goes next, it's why it's wonderful!
