Publisher's summary

Winner of the ALA Schneider Family Award, Wendy Mass has had her fiction for young readers honored with a Junior Library Guild Selection and a Book Sense Children's Pick. Every Soul a Star is the tale of an extraordinary occurrence related through three very different perspectives.

Unlike the thousands converging at Moon Shadow to witness a total solar eclipse, Ally calls the isolated campground home. Bree shields herself in a cloak of good looks and popularity, but there is something within her no one suspects. And Jack, overweight and socially inept, finds himself on the verge of a startling possibility.

Yes I have listened to this book 3 times

I am an adult and I will probably listen to this book again. There is something of pure fun and enthusiasm in this book that adult books just don't get with all their stupid angst. It's about the universe and young adults finding themselves and friendship.

Read with my 6th grader

My 6th grade son started reading this book for school and loved it. He recommended I read it with him. It was such a pleasure to read and we enjoyed discussing the changes the teens in the book were going through as well as the science of the eclipse.

Very interesting.

Where does Every Soul a Star rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Well honestly It's really cool that it switches characters point of view and voices. It's not long and drawn out either.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Every Soul a Star?

When Bree says "I am not plain, or average or - God forbid - vanilla. I am peanut butter rocky road with multicolored sprinkles, hot fudge and a cherry on top."

Have you listened to any of the narrators’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No sorry I haven't

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes it was. But that's impossible.

Any additional comments?

Many interesting facts about the constellations

My Opinion

It’s a really good novel and I personally love this author and the narration isn’t bad either, so I would say to read it. But I listened to the audiobook and read along with half of it.

The narrators are great and I love how the book make me feel and it was like I was actually in the book and seeing what they were seeing. Amazing. ten out of ten! Also the narrators should be in more books!

3 Teens, 1 Total Eclipse, Forever Friendships

Any additional comments?

Alpha "Ali", Bree, & Jack --- three 13 yr old kids that didn't know each other before this summer. But the prime viewing spot for the upcoming total solar eclipse would bring them together in more ways than one. Ali, a super-fan of everything astronomy, helps her family run the Moon Shadow campground, the prime viewing spot for the upcoming total solar eclipse. Bree, a fashion model wanna-be, is the outsider in a family of geniuses. Jack, a pudgy social outsider, failed science class which landed him in summer school. Ali's dad accepted a new science job in Chicago, & they leave the campground after the total eclipse event. Bree's parents have accepted the job as the new campground owners, & have decided to move in a week early in order to view the total solar eclipse. Jack's science teacher has offered him a position as his assistant on his summer trip to the campground in exchange for not having to go to summer school. They, along with 3 sidekicks, build a life-long bond while conducting a science experiment in Mr Silver's unexpected absence. These are the events that brought the teens together. The eclipse experience is what locks each other in their memories forever.

I love a good "coming of age" story. Make the common factor of the teens a total solar eclipse experience....gold! This is definitely a young adult read intended for 12-16 yr olds, but it's a story for all ages. The kids' description of the major changes in their lives, watching the story of an unlikely friendship unfold, & seeing how an astronomical phenomenon can bring the entire story to a point in what made this story so special. Each of the characters are special in their own right, but their story together was my favorite.

Age recommendation: all ages

On a scale of 1-10 stars, I give it 9.
