Publisher's summary

Deep Dark Blue is a young adult memoir of surviving sexual abuse in the Air Force Academy. This is a story that needs to be told and refuses to go away.

"I want to be in the Air Force someday" - these are the words Polo Tate engraves on her junior dog tags at age 11, an unpopular dream for most young girls. But her hard work pays off and at 18, Polo finds herself in basic training at the United States Air Force Academy. She does everything right except fly under the radar. No one prepares her for what comes next: physical, sexual, and emotional abuse at the hands of her superiors; and harassment from her peers, who refuse to believe her story.

Deep Dark Blue is more than a memoir about sexual assault. It's about breaking boundaries but also setting them. It's about learning to trust your instincts. It's a story of survival, resilience, and finally, finding your joy.

Excellent story telling

The author did a great job of telling her story. It was easy to follow the timeline, the story was interesting and exciting to read.

At many points I was annoyed at the author... This only illustrates the power of this book.

To me the test of great literature is when I can look through the author's eyes. The word choices and feelings were perfect,. I'm glad the author made the (end) decisions that she did.

Wow... just wow!

I couldn’t stop listening! Polo’s story was heartbreaking and heartfelt. I am shocked and disappointed in the USAF and it’s negligence and ignorant focus on homosexuality over violence and rape. I’m glad that “her, horrible her” will never hurt anyone again. But what about “him horrible him!?”
So glad you got your life back, Polo.... happy there is hope and success after darkness and pain. I also hope that your silence doesn’t mean violence and pain for another innocent victim.

Incredibly powerful

Polo does a masterful job of narrating her own book and it heightens the profound impact of her story! I cried, I felt intense anger, I laughed, and I understood! I highly recommend this book!!

A bold book of tears, courage & hope

A riveting story of bravery & discovery, I consumed this in one sitting. As a USAFA woman who journeyed decades before her, Polo’s story is my story decades later (& unfortunately far too many academy women’s story). The raw, eviceral details of the events she endured were triggers for me, which have been pent up & buried for decades. I’m glad she found her joy again as I have. This should be mandatory reading for all female academy candidates.

Wow intriguing and more true to life

I definitely would not recommend IF you ever had SEXUAL trauma that lingers. However, the very last chapter in the books shows a profound way to healing, at least for some. Or, 20 swears offends you, including the f word, but in context, not as a general part of conversation.

Sorry for the spoiler alert, but they only those who need to know that information and see that. Otherwise absolutely fantastic. Intriguing and detailed account of the life of one pope Tate. The military references and such swerve descriptive enough for someone who has no experience with that. Yet, now it’s over, detailed that it takes away from the story.

Absolutely fantastic would definitely recommend!! The raw emotions were palpable ! It was often I had to separate my emotions from Tate’s. I had tears a few times. Also, tears of joy!!

Wow, more accurate portrayal of real life than a typical romance novel.
