For the second book in the season this was both amazing and somewhat strangely lacking. Any scene where the students were just being students was fun and entertaining, but other things like how some plot threads come out of nowhere and others just get clipped short like it was a movie reel budget cut just felt strange. There were a lot of scenes that felt like they either got left out or that the book could have benefited from letting them go on a bit more.
Like the last book it still had a lot of overwritten areas that lost my attention. But only like 2 or 3 hours worth instead of 6. So an improvement there.
The characters were still flat with the book insisting that everything was adorable, the result being not cuteness but the feeling that everything was the same.
As for the story itself. It was a series of subplots that slowly worked towards the main plot. A great way of doing it. Except the writer must have left the subplot arcs in his other pants.
All the subplots were flat affairs lacking any sort of arc or real build up. Most of the build up consisted of being boringly told or just hint dropped "Later X will occur" then X later occuring to lots of fanfare. So the feeling was of a lot of important stuff happening but getting smushed together. The book really needed another 6 to 8 hours to properly develop all these plots. With the writer's tendency to overwrite that would have been turned into 12 to 16 hours so I can understand his hesitation.
Great voice acting, great fun and then you make want more when the new book is written but has not come out in audiobook format yet! Damn you I say, I demand more good writing and story telling you little ooze of s writer.
Totally recommend the books, they are childish in a way that makes it magical and the voice acting is performed great. I just wish Google didn't say it was a trilogy and that the next book will be the last. All good things must come to an end I guess.
