On the ruined planet Earth, where 50 billion people are confined to megacities and resources are scarce, Deedra has been handed a bleak and mundane existence by the magistrate she works so hard for. But one day she comes across a beautiful boy named Rose struggling to cross the river - a boy with a secretive past and special abilities who is somehow able to find comfort and life from their dying planet.
But just as the two form a bond, it is quickly torn apart after the magistrate's son is murdered, and Rose becomes the prime suspect. Little do Deedra and Rose know how much their relationship will affect the fate of everyone who lives on the planet.

Narration sells the book
I originally found this book recommended on a Christian book list. Well, one person talks about the Bible in one paragraph of the entire book. There’s more about transhumanism than any other religious viewpoint. There’s a few mild curse words and the disrespectful use of the name “God”, (by which I would rule out the book’s claim to being Christian completely).
Other than that it was a truly enjoyable, at times gripping story. I heard only Christine Lakin’s narration, no male voice at all. So, I don’t know where Peter Facinelli’s voice features, (did I snooze???). Christine’s voice characters are a treat to the ears. However, I can’t speak for how men would take her attempts at male voices; while I was OK with them men may have a similar reaction to the male character voices as I do when men narrate female characters.
Any parts where I may hav begin to yawn were carried along with finesse by Christine Lakin.I may just relisten to this keeper at least once more.
