Publisher's summary

In 17-year-old Dakota Kekoa's line of work, a job can go bad in a split second.

And when a job goes bad, people die.

Suspended from working as a tax collector in her draconic family's protection racket, Dakota is assigned a secret mission from her grandfather. A foreign queen has offered a grave insult to Dakota's grandfather by running a vampire dinner cruise off the coast of the Mabiian Islands, and his retribution must be swift.

Yet, when Dakota infiltrates the ship Crimson Sunset, nothing is at it seems. In a split second, not only is Dakota in deathly peril, all of New Anglo is on the road to war.

Great addition to the series

Any additional comments?

Great Sequel. Thoroughly enjoyed this book. The world Rita Stradling has created just keeps getting better. A creative, interesting, unusual and complex world where you never know exactly what is going to happen next. This is definitely a fun, entertaining and enjoyable series and one I will be recommending often.

The story pulls you immediately and never lets go. Once again the story is full of action, suspense, magic, mystery, vampires, dragons, mystery and more. There is a lot packed into this story. Great characters. Both old and new. Friend and foe. Several new and interesting characters. While I usually really hate love triangles I'm really curious as to how this one will play out.

Dakota and Wyvern are back and up to their "aspects" caught up in another unusual situation. What starts out as a mission for her grandfather quickly turns into something entirely different. Putting them into a situation they could never have imagined.

I enjoyed the narration much more in this book. While there is still over emphasis on each word it didn't bother me this time. I now just think of this as the way Dakota speaks. Pleasant voice. Really good character voices. Nice pace to the narration. Clearly spoken.

Sequel for the dragons

This audiobook was provided by the author, narrator, or publisher at no cost in exchange for an unbiased review courtesy of AudiobookBoom dot com.

I read the first story in the series (Henchgirl). Rex is a good sequel following it in style and the plot naturally flows from the first novel. The romance was a little iffy, so I'd say this is definitely more YA than romance. I'm a little put off by the love triangle, but YMMV.

I thought the narrator did ok, but I felt she over-emphasized her non-character narration

Journey Continued

I got this book via audiobook boom. Book 2 continued Dakota's journey and enhanced it. The author immersed me into the story and the narrator brought it to life. This is also another great sequel and did not rehash so much of book 1. Dakota's character continues to grow stronger.

Exciting & suspenseful, great sequel to Henchgirl

This exciting sequel to Henchgirl kept me captivated from start to finish. Dakota Kekoa's life is complex; her contract with Wyvern Rex not only continues to cause restrictions and complications in her life but it also tears at her heart and puts her at risk. She wants her independence but at the same time she remains inexplicably drawn to Wyvern. Her caring nature, strength and the conflicts she feels comes through well in this audiobook, especially after a job she is on for her grandfather goes awry, leaving her loved ones lives hanging in the balance and bringing Dracon/vampire, Harrison, into the mix. The narrator did a great job of giving individual voices to the characters. Drawing us in with her voice and intonation and helping you feel the fear, love, humour, conflict and anxiety occurring. The world this story is set in, and the unusual supernatural aspects the characters possess, continue to grow in depth and intricacy, making it even more captivating and unique than the first book. I loved the development of the characters, from the way Wyvern tries to meet Dekota's conditions even though it is against his draconian upbringing, to Billy's easygoing humour and Lorelei's difficulties with her aspect; you can not help but become attached to all the characters. This well written story is laced with action, magic, duplicity, suspense and romance. It quickly draws you in and leads you on a fast paced, exhilarating adventure that, at its end, leaves you eager to see what direction Dakota's life will take. This story has fabulous writing, realistic dialogue and absolutely intriguing and engaging characters. I received this audiobook from the author at no cost and under no obligation.

A Perfect Sequel

What made the experience of listening to Rex the most enjoyable?

The world Rita Stradling created during Henchgirl gets a lot more complicated and much larger in Rex. It is unique and refreshing and you will get sucked into the story. Wywern and Dakota take you on a thrilling ride and will definitely be back for more.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Rex?

Waking up from the coma. I wont say who because I wont spoil it. But it makes you feel happy butterflies.

Which character – as performed by Sorrel Brigman – was your favorite?

Wyvern and Harrison. Wywern was confident, protective and caring while Harrison was loyal, moody and comforting. They are good friends and you will love both. But I still love the alpha male Wyvern!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

BOTH!!!! This is beautifully written and you will feel every emotion in the book! Love, want, hate, betrayal, friendship, fear, pain. Its a roller coaster ride I have been through twice now! I can't put this book on pause!!! I love it!

Any additional comments?

I loved Henchgirl and Rex, was even better! I didn’t think that was possible but it is amazing!
Our girl Dakota is getting herself into dangerous situations still and the plot twists in this one will have you on your toes constantly! The stakes are even higher in this book and you get to see a lot more of both Dakota’s and Wyvern’s family and learn about the connections each person has with each other.
I can’t put into words how amazing this author is. I cannot wait to read the 3rd book!

An outstanding sequel!!!

Rita is an outstanding writer and the world she created in Henchgirl expands and become more complex.

Like always, I was sucked in quickly and had a hard time putting it down. Dakota is a great heroine and her adventures never disappoint.

I think the narrator did an awesome job bringing the story to life.

The characters are well developed and this fascinating dragon society is well explained and explored.

Dragons & Vamps

I usually find that the second book in a series is a great letdown. But, since I wasn't totally thrilled with the first book, this one was actually much better!

Dakota Kekoa is still trying to avoid a relationship with Wyvern Manderson when her sister and uncle are both "cursed" by someone or something. Also, her grandfather is lying in a coma, near death. Will Dakota be able to save them? Also, she meets a handsome vampire, Harrison, who might be a better fit for her than Wyvern. However, the two are great friends. What's a girl to do?

I enjoyed this book more than the first mainly because it focused more on the fantasy aspect, with dragons, vampires, human magic, and dracons. There was less of the almost pervy parts that were in the first book, where Wyvern was more of a stalker than a boyfriend. The descriptions of the Dragon Kingdom and the addition of the fantasy/magical aspects were very good.

However, I hated the email sections between Dakota and Wyvern. They were tedious and really didn't add anything to the story. And, why did the author jump on the love triangle bandwagon that is so prevalent in YA books? I enjoy this genre, but am tired of these triangles!

The narrator did an OK job, but I had to speed up my Kindle in order to keep from falling asleep. In fact, I ended up reading the last 2/3 of the book rather than torture myself with the Audible version.
