Short story that’s as long as a book.

*Possible spoilers? But probably not.*

I never realized how many times these characters “closed their eyes” until I watched “The Greatest Showman”. Because every time one of them closed their eyes...I can see, a world that’s waiting just for me. That I call my own... So much eye closing. And the angst! Gah. How was this book over 8 hours long?! It’s the first one that I skipped ahead on because, ok, we get it! She’s not prepared, and he has all the feels. This whole book was worth maybe 5 chapters of one of the other books. There was almost no content. It’s all just internal monologues and descriptions. The character interaction is so limited that there’s no real character or story development. The good parts just get thrown in right at the end and then it leaves you hanging. Just listen to the first couple chapters and skip to the last few. You’re not missing anything in the middle.

It was Ok

As much as I enjoyed the other books in this series, I had a hard time with Restore Me. It felt like the entire book was the following scene ad nauseum:
Juliet: "I'm not sure what to do."
Warner: "I'm so in love with Juliet, it hurts."
Juliet: "I'm not sure what to do now."
Warner: "Juliet is so beautiful, it's painful"
Juliet: "What do I do know - I am not sure."
Warner: "Juliet is my world, she's so perfect."

I kept waiting for a plot to kick in but it was pretty much a love letter to those fans who wanted more Warner mooning over Juliet. Fortunately, we had some great scenes with Kenji again - he's always a welcome injection of self effacing humor to keep us from taking the situations too seriously. But there wasn't enough Kenji to go around to offset the saccharine romance.

In addition, it gets tiring to have everyone, including all the enemies, falling in love with Juliet instead of disliking or destroying her. Yet again, we have new characters introduced who fall for her sweetness and fall all over themselves to help her. I can't say I really bought it and it would have been nice to have someone actually dislike her for being too good-two-shoes and naive.

About half way through the Audible narration, I got really bored. Juliet unsure, Warner pining for her, some silly plot device about her family and a secret that Warner fears will make her hate him. It wasn't enough to keep me interested since we really didn't get any character or plot development and it all felt kind of vapid.

The Audible narration got old as well. Juliet sound like she is 12 and the addition of Warner's perspective didn't do much for me. It was kind of jarring to go from Warner sounding one way with the female narrator and then sounding different with the male narrator.

Weird narrator changes

Kate Simses is awesome and every book so far has been great, narrator-wise. But yikes, the male narrator for Warner’s chapters is kind of hard to listen to. He can sound really robotic, which maybe is what he was going for? But it’s so bad in comparison!

Love Love Love this book

Characters were awesome. Story itself was AMAZING. Only complaint about the audiobook is the sound of pen scratching or page turning or whatever it is during the excerpts from Juliets journal, is a little overwhelming. All in all amazing.

Gah!

I submitted a review on amazon but also wanted to review here as well because of the narration. Kate Simses - you are awesome! I generally can’t stand female narrators but you do a phenomenal job - and I have listened to the first three books like 50+ times.
James Fouhey - I think you did and awesome job as well - especially since I was a bit skeptical in the beginning since I had listened to Kate’s version of Warner’s voice so many times before. Still, I think you were a perfect choice for the intense but measured voice indicative of Warner. Great job!
