Publisher's summary

Its appetite is ravenous. Its teeth scalpel-sharp. Its power unstoppable as it smashes the steel doors holding it in a Monterey, California, aquarium. The captive 20-ton Megalodon shark has tasted human blood, and it wants more.

On the other side of the world, in the silent depths of the ocean, lies the Mariana Trench, where the Megalodon has spawned since the dawn of time. Paleo-biologist Jonas Taylor once dared to enter this perilous cavern. He alone faced the monster and cut its heart out, and he wears the painful scars of that deadly encounter.

Now, as the body count rises and the horror of the Meg's attack grips the California coast, Jonas must begin the hunt again. But to do that means returning to the dark terror of the trench...where the Meg is waiting. Using himself as bait, Jonas will enter the ultimate battle - a fight to the death between man and beast in the darkest recesses of the ocean...and a fight for his sanity from the depths of his own tormented soul.

85% Speed

I would suggest that you listen to this book at 85% speed the reader talk's way to fast it kinda takes you out of the moment but if you slow it down it makes it better. But that's just my opinion.

Great story but narration is too fast

The story is wonderful and the narration is great as long as you listen to it at 80% speed.

a great story but awful narrating

I love the story but the narrator was awful to listen. If the book was not a part of series, I would have stop and return the book.

Decent Sequel, But Just OK

As a follow up it was pretty good. The narrator changed and the new reader was a little fast for me. I wound up having to reduce the speed of platvavk to about .85. The story was a little too focused on the villains and less on the things that made the first book fascinating. I feel like the Megaladon took a backseat to the James Bondian villain.

A good story with an awful narrator

If you like the Meg series and books of that type you will like this I first read the book years ago but since I saw it in audio form I thought I would give it a go. it's the narrator that ruins it, if you can get by his bad accents and overall just bad voice then get it. if not stick to the kindle edition.

Awesome Story, Bad Narrator

True to its predecessor, The Trench was a good story, an awesome one, in fact. It was darker, the villain a piece of garbage human being. It left a hook, right there at the end, that made me want to read the next one. I'm really starting to like Steve Alten's writing. The only gripe I have is the narrator.

A good listen ruined by monotone narration

Overall, I found the story to be pretty good, but not as good as the first. The book could have been better, except for the monotone narrator. action scenes were ruined by this guy. His atrocious Sean Connery impression didn't help things either. I found myself distracted throughout the whole book by his tone. it wasn't bad to listen to once, but this one won't be a book that I listen to multiple times.

It’s not what you think it is.

The trench is not at all what you would expect going in if your reading a book about giant sharks. The plot is brilliant, the characters are likable, there are so many twists and the action is great. What I really like about it is that the sharks and other creatures in the story aren’t the only danger in the story. There are a couple human villains as well, but everything that’s going on all relates to the shark in some way. Steve Alten is a very clever writer and the trench is probably my favorite of his famous meg series out of the ones I have read so far. I give this book an A+.
