Publisher's summary

"One of the best acid tests of an introductory book...is that the text allows the reader to learn an important skill independent of the illustrations. Fly casting is very difficult to teach in person, and even more so in print, yet this book contains the best, the most interesting, and the most effective introduction to fly casting I have ever read. I think Terry puts the emphasis in the right places...he doesn't neglect entomology, but he devotes twice as many words to trout behavior, a far more interesting and useful pastime if you must introduce a scientific bent into your fishing. If this is your first fly fishing book, you are very fortunate, you're starting off on the right track. If you've read others before, I think you'll agree with me that you wish this had been your first." - Tom Rosenbauer.

Great book on all aspects of flyfishing

Great book to listen to for the beginner as well as the pro. While some of the basic stuff may be repetitive, it is entertaining. I would have anyone interested in fly fishing listen to it or read it.

One of the best

This is one of the best sporting books I have ever read. I love fishing and tried fly fishing but it takes too much patience. This book has very entertainingly brought me to appreciate the art or fly fishing. This sport has been around for hundreds of years and has a very loyal following. Read this book even if you, like me, have no intention of taking up the sport. You will come to understand why those that do enjoy it so much. You might even become a catch and release fly fisher.

Let it load.

“Perfect” A joy to listen to. A word of caution to the would be reader: You’ll be off to the river, backyard practice casting or off to the fly shop after this book. Helpful advice, humor and nostalgia abound.

Accessible, engaging, informative!

As a beginner fly fisherman, I have consumed podcasts, youtube videos, and Facebook fishing group posts, in an obsessive way over this winter, in preparation for the Spring.
I felt the need to view this info in a linear, less overwhelming, less scattered way. this book was exactly what I needed. I listened in less than a week and will now go back and take some notes.
well written, well performed (think Paul Harvey's staccato entertaining, fact sharing style if you're old enough to remember) and mostly facts and recreatable drills with some interesting literary and historic references thrown in (and a little old music as well) not too heavy handed and stilted like some others I have reviewed, not condescending at all. Don't know elementary terms like "pocket water"all and "drag free"? These terms and more are well explained here, without judgement. All in all a great effort. The Tom Rosenbauer recommendation helped too! P. S the final chapter, a vignette of the catching of one fish good was mesmerizing and inspiring. Art, indeed!
