Good Mystery

Sparrow House, by Karin Kaufman, is a good mystery through and through. Although second in a series the book is easily a stand alone read. Murder, mystery and mayhem, add a touch of romance and you will be reading through the night to finish the book. Genealogist Anna and her friend are staying in a supposedly haunted house. And just what are those sounds during the night--did you just hear that? Why are the pictures moving? Wait a second that was not there last night! And just who is Alice? The author does a great job of posing lots of questions for the reader to try to figure out and wraps it all up in a surprise ending. Twists and turns, tension and suspense, friends and enemies...Sparrow House has it all. And where did that name come from anyway!
Becky Doughty did a marvelous job with the narration, making for an enjoyable listening experience. I received an audible copy of the book from the author in exchange for an honest review.

Good & Creepy Mystery

In the second book of the series, Anna Denning's genealogy work brings her in contact with a new list of interesting--and some deeply creepy--characters. Anna's work centers on Sparrow House and the untouched family records within it. Kaufman has a fresh, even off-kilter, take on the "haunted house" theme. It got under my skin---even more so when the mystery was solved and I looked back on some of the scarier moments with a new perspective. This one really stuck with me. You'll have to read it to find out why!

Karin is a clear, concise writer, and Sparrow house has a twisty plot and a fabulous setting. Heroine Anna is smart and tenacious, and she's not easily intimidated. I spent about half of my time cheering her on and the other half wishing she'd take her dog and go home, and lock all the doors for a couple years! This mystery has cozy elements (love the Colorado mountain town where it takes place) but it's packed with tension. I'd classify it as a mostly clean read, with several events that might be disturbing to some readers.

The narrator, Becky Doughty, has the kind of voice that "disappears" when you listen to her. Neither bland nor overly dramatic, she's clear and smooth. I love it when the narrator doesn't get between me and the story, and she is one of the best.

Boring!!

Thank God that's over.

The writing is good, but the plot is so non-existent that you don't really care what happens to whom.

Those are hours of my life I will never get back..,...
