A brief history of wine

This was a fantastic way to skim the surface of the world of wine.
the author climbs into history of regions and each type of wine.

I actually ended up trying a few new wine thanks to his audio book.

I'd recommend this to anyone that enjoys history, science, and of course... wine.

Hardly a beginner material

The first few chapters are very insightful. I loved listening to the history of wine, what each step of filtration does to it, how different oak barrels make changes to wine taste, BUT!
Soon we'll get into the nitty gritty of every single region in France and their innumerous appellations. It's too much information and isn't very practical for a beginner.

The section of wine pairings is fairly shallow, which was a major disappointment. YouTube videos are far better.

This audiobook should have an accompanying PDF, but It doesn't. Very hard to recall and make sense of all the information dumped on you.

Still, I give 4 stars for enthusiasm.

Now I'll go find a better audiobook...

A very thorough wine guide.

I love it, but I'd say it's probably not for beginners. Couldn't get everything understood so I would definitely listen to it over and over again.

amusing guide to wine regions

Brian Wheation displayed his passion for the subject making a difficult book more manageable. I would suggest looking at a map.

good historical overview

pros: good overview from an expert about the significant wine growing regions, technics and styles of the world.
cons:
-the last 15 years are missing, since it is an older book, and there are relevant changes in styles, trends, rising regions l, etc.
-old fashioned view of the author: e.g. the wine cellar starts with Bordeaux, Burgundy and Port.

conclusion: worth it

Educational & Entertaining

Brain Wheaton does a great job narrating his own book. Although it is over 10 hours, it is neither dry nor strung out. Brain actually breezes through many wine related topics - giving a novice a well-informed overview. He includes many anodotes thought his career in the wine industry and adds his sense of humor to the stories. I recommend this audio book to all fellow wine lovers.

This is a very comprehensive overview of the world of wine, how wine came to be (and now comes to be) and the many, many varieties in which it we encounter and enjoy it. Exceptional narration.

Getting dated

A lot of this information will be as true today as when it was first written. There are a few chapters that are 15 years out of date. Overall worth the listen.
