Publisher's Summary

Super Bowl-winning coach and #1 New York Times best-selling author Tony Dungy has had an unusual opportunity to reflect on what it takes to achieve significance. He is looked to by many as the epitome of the success and significance that is highly valued in our culture. He also works every day with young men who are trying to achieve significance through football and all that goes with a professional athletic career - such as money, power, and celebrity. Coach Dungy has had all that, but he passionately believes that there is a different path to significance, a path characterized by attitudes, ambitions, and allegiances that are all too rare but uncommonly rewarding. Uncommon reveals lessons on achieving significance that the coach has learned from his remarkable parents, his athletic and coaching career, his mentors, and his journey with God. A particular focus of the book: what it means to be a man of significance in a culture that is offering young men few positive role models.

Primer for Life

Tony Dungy reads his own words is a very easy to listen style. I found myself very engaged with his style and the life stories he shares in a very compelling package of lessons learned. This is the kind of material I found to be helpful, practical and relevant.
Hearing stories from a head coach inside the NFL makes his example stories interesting and so enjoyable you almost feel as if Tony is your new best friend. I also appreciate how Tony does not down play his personal faith and followings of Jesus and the bible. Yet, it has a ring of universal truth so that even if you are not aligned to the Christian walk, I believe this book talks to most people deep down where we all want to relate to one another.
If you wish you had a pocket personal or professional coach, I recommend this book. If you aspire to be a better person, Father, Mother, Friend, Co-worker or leader I recommend this book.
I was not familiar with Tony Dungy until I listened to this book. Now I’m a fan. Tony Dungy has restored my faith in role models that can make a different in people’s life.

Combining God and Football

I am not a football fan. In fact, I know nothing about the sport. I purchased this book because I am looking for a way to engage the men of my church in Bible Study. This book will be an excellent tool. Simple stated, but rich with spiritual truths, presented in a way that I believe will inspire the men, women and youth in our congregation -- whether they are football fans or not. Tony and Nathan have done an excellent job of communicating how Coach Dungy incorporated his faith and Biblical principles as the foundation of his NFL coaching "ministry." He successfully does so without compromising the intergrity of the Gospel. Not only was I personally blessed by Dungy's testimony, but this book has inspired to learn a little bit about football. Until now, I thought football was purely about physical domination, not having recognized the spiritual and strategic aspects of the game!
