Publisher's summary

In this hope-filled book, Nouwen offers a fresh interpretation of modern ministry. Here he offers inspiration to men and women who want to be of service in their Church or community but who have found the traditional ways of ministry alienating and ineffective. According to Nouwen, "the minister is called to recognize the sufferings of his time in his own heart and make that recognition the starting point of his service."

"One's overall response to this book has to be 'Yes.' Yes, this describes a style of ministry desperately needed by all of us." ( The Christian Century)

I had to focus but am so glad I did!

This was a inspiring! I am accustomed with audiobooks to be able to keep busy while half listening. This one required for me to go back and really listen at key points. I am so glad I did. It was life changing!

Excellent Read

This book is like two books in one. As if one book talks about what happens and what it means when you can't relate to the meaning of life; and another book talking about what is the meaning of death and an ideal type of a meaning of life at the end of this life we know it. What makes the book interesting is how these subconscious books are woven to become one book, "The Wounded Healer" and the wisdom, the author was given to carefully put these ideas down! This has become one of my favorite books and I truly recommend. Blessings family 😇🙏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

From our own loneliness to common human nature

Henri Nouwen is really a sober writer. He sees through our respective sorrowful or lonely feelings and teaches us to gaze the common human nature that we all share. And from that very start, to sympathize, to be together, and to love.

Insights for those who attempt to serve others.

This book provides a resource in common sense language and examples on how one’s own feelings and shortcomings can be overcome in the context of service to others.

Life changing

This book redefines what it means to be a minister or Christian servant of any kind and any denomination. It moves past the thinking that we must have it “all together” in our own struggles before we can effectively minister to others to the reality of how we can in fact offer the most to others by being authentically who we are. The tone of the language tells of the time at which it was written, but the spirit of message transcends time and place.
