Generations of dogs have been labeled training lemons for requiring actual motivation when all along they were perfectly normal. Numerous other completely and utterly normal dogs have been branded as canine misfits simply because they grew up to act like dogs. Barking, chewing, sniffing, licking, jumping up, and occasionally (just like people) having arguments are as normal and natural for dogs as wagging tails and burying bones.

She realized that the socialization and parenting techniques they used to raise their cubs were rooted in bonding, communication, and play: not in aggression, dominance, or punishment. If people used these techniques when training their dogs, she realized, there would be no need for prong collars, choke chains, or any kind of physical or verbal aggression.

Story
As a SEAL on combat deployment in Iraq, Mike Ritland saw a military working dog in action and instantly knew he found his true calling. While the SEAL teams had used dogs in the past, they never had dogs trained specifically by SEALs, for SEALs. To fill this void, Ritland started his own company after he retired, training and supplying dogs for the West Coast SEAL teams. He knew that less than 1% of all working dogs had what it takes to contribute to the success of our nation’s elite combat units. He searched the globe for animals who fit this specific profile.

Story
More than 90 percent of dog owners consider their pets to be members of their family. But often, despite our best intentions, we are letting our dogs down by not giving them the guidance and direction they need. Unwanted behavior is the number-one reason dogs are relinquished to shelters and rescue groups. The key to training dogs effectively is first to understand why our dogs do what they do. And no one can address this more authoritatively than the diplomates of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists.

Excellent
I usually do not write reviews and this one will definitely not be exhaustive, but I had to give this book a standing ovation. This is partly because of how well my new pup has responded to this type of training! The other is that this book has completely changed my mindset on training. In the past I have always used "negative reinforcement". It has worked in the past, but I have to admit it has been way more enjoyable and easier training for both myself and my new pup using this method! This book has set out a very simple and organized schedule that builds on each week and was perfect for me with my super busy schedule. Can't say enough good about the book. I also bought the kindle version for quick reference. If your on the fence...buy the book, read from cover to cover and train your pup!

I feel much more ready to adopt a rescue now!
I was a small child when I last had a dog in the family, and my wife has never had a pet of any kind. When we first discussed adopting a rescue, we agreed that we needed to first have our own house with a yard, and we had to be prepared to spend the time to train and adjust the future family member to work well and smoothly together. Now, two years after first discussing this, we have a place with a yard, and have taken the time to prepare.
We have a few books in print, Kindle, and this audio book. This audio book has proven to be my favorite -- the reader has a pleasant and easy to hear voice. The material is well organized. and I appreciate that it covers not just what techniques to try, but a bit of the background about why those methods should work. Many of the lessons have alternative options if the main technique isn't working, and all lessons have a troubleshooting section at the end, and some pointers about common pitfalls.
While we have not yet adopted, so I can't vouch for the efficacy of the training yet, I can say that pre reading this made me far more comfortable. I will be re listening to this as I go through the individual lessons.

Very good book.
If you have a dog PLEASE read this.
I have yet to read a better book on dogs and owners. My family has no dog training training, but I've been around dogs since I was a baby. (40ish years) this is the closest thing to how my dad would train his his dogs. For the record I've lived with over 100 dogs and have never once been bitten. :) this book is encouraging.

loved it
it covers everything from regular dog training to dealing with issues and aggression in ways that 9really work. It turned my dog around . She was becoming quite aggressive even biting, now she is becoming a new dog. Happy, pleasant and not aggressive, but it takes patients and being consistent. These training methods really work. I'll never go back to the old way of doing it.

Positive reinforcement, not punishment - I get it
What disappointed you about The Power of Positive Dog Training?
The author goes on and on, preaching about positive reinforcement, as though she is in a debate of positive vs. negative reinforcement. I downloaded the book because I already believe in positive reinforcement. I just thought that through the book I might learn something new. My headline summarizes chapters 1-4. I just can't listen to any more of this.
What do you think your next listen will be?
IDK
Would you be willing to try another one of Susan Boyce’s performances?
Not a compelling reader. I'd have to really like the book.
You didn’t love this book... but did it have any redeeming qualities?
I like the picture of the dog on the cover.
Any additional comments?
Would not recommend.

The old way is out, positive is in
What made the experience of listening to The Power of Positive Dog Training the most enjoyable?
was able to listen while driving around
What was one of the most memorable moments of The Power of Positive Dog Training?
I spend all day in a vehicle for work. Just like everything else im the owner of a golden retrieve, I wanted to make sure that he was the best dog I have ever had, sure I took him to puppy training were he received his CGC but like i said I wanted one of those dog you see that no matter what he will alway come when called, didn't run after people or other dogs. I wanted him to enjoy his life as well. I work nights so i had time before work for training and with Audio book I was able to learn how to train positive, I never enjoyed getting hit and with there memory so short hitting wasn't an option since I work nights he wouldn't remember why he was i trouble when I got home. This book along with others, combining everything My dog who is now 3 and named Steve is the perfect dog I have always wanted. He docent need a lease ( even though I always have it with) when we go on walks. We have no fence around our house and he know his property line when I let hime out in the morning. I wanted him to learn agility, but I guess with the training and wanting him to enjoy himself exploring but still come when called he didn't want to learn agility, he is now a certified therapy and comfort dog. He goes everywhere with me, but he loves to go to the seinor homes and visit all the elderly. Wherever we go everyone wants to know "Where Steve"
Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?
I got several different positive training books and combining them together worked

good solid dog training book
This is a good solid book with practical ideas. Easy to read and easy to listen to. I would recommend it for anybody who owns a dog.
