Publisher's Summary

This book will help you create your own square foot garden.
Have you always wanted to garden in small areas?
Do you want to create a garden which you will be proud of?
Have you wanted to learn the techniques which will make you garden flourish?
Look no further! My book will answer all your questions!
In my book, I will show you proven steps and strategies on how to implement square foot gardening in your backyard.
Square foot gardening is one of the best garden maintenance systems for backyard gardeners. Traditional gardening requires a lot of effort in tilling the soil, dealing with weeds, watering the plants and other garden maintenance tasks. However, its results are not fit for the needs of backyard gardeners. If you use traditional gardening systems in your backyard, you will end up harvesting too many of the same type of fruits or vegetables at one time.
Square foot gardening requires some effort to set up, but it is easy to maintain. Because this system uses prepared soil, there is no need to dig up the soil in your backyard. This book prescribes using the later versions of the square foot gardening system. In the later versions, the planting boxes are above ground. This separates your crops from contamination present in the soil in your area.
Square foot gardening allows you to plan your harvest, so that you do not end up with too many fruits and vegetables at one time. You may plant only the specific amount that you need.
Lastly, this book applies organic gardening principles in implementing the square foot gardening system. In this book, we prescribe the use only of materials and plants native to your area. For instance, some early sources of square foot gardening suggest the use of materials that, we have learned, are not sustainable. The researchers of this book looked into alternatives for these materials and included them in the book.

Fruits and Vegetables

I rarely buy books, to be honest--it's a matter of money + space - great library = few purchases. However, I have bought several copies of this book because this method is superb: it's neat, it's clean, it's extremely--and I mean extremely--easy to manage. This is--by far--the easiest, best-laid out, user-friendly books I have EVER seen, complete with charts, pictures of each step--you name it. And personally, as a frugalholic, I love a book where someone who doesn't have to worry about cost remembers that other people do--Mel writes this for the frugal at heart complete with LOTS of money-saving tips!!!
