Publisher's summary

For any woman dealing with the fallout of infidelity, this sensitive and practical guide offers proven tools to help you make wise and empowering decisions as you deal with your husband’s sexual betrayal.

If you have been devastated by your husband's sexual betrayal--whether an isolated incident or a long-term pattern of addiction--you don't have to live as a victim. If you choose to stay in your marriage, you have options other than punishing, tolerating, or ignoring your spouse; in fact, extraordinary growth awaits a woman willing to deal with the pain of her husband's struggles with sexual purity. Even if your spouse will not participate in a program for healing, you can change your own life in powerful and permanent ways. Shattered Vows is inspired by Debra Laaser's own journey through betrayal, her extensive work with hundreds of hurting women as a licensed marriage and family therapist, and her healed marriage after her husband's infidelity.

In this book, she gives you the emotional tools to develop greater intimacy in your life, spiritual tools to transform your suffering, and meaningful answers to the questions that arise amid the complex fallout of broken vows:

  • What am I supposed to do now?
  • Why should I get help when this is his problem?
  • How could this have happened?
  • Where can I hide my heart?
  • When will I stop feeling so out of control?
  • What do you mean, "do I want to get well?"
  • How can I ever trust him again?
  • Is forgiving him really possible?
  • How can we rebuild our relationship?

The pain endured from sexual betrayal can break your heart, but it does not need to break your life.

Encouraging and hopeful

I was encouraged that a marriage can survive sexual betrayal. I would recommend for any woman whose husband has been unfaithful or involved in sexual sin.

Not What I Expected

I’m not finished with the book yet. I’m debating whether I will or not. I can’t help but to wonder where the author has been living and what churches she has been attending. I have had dealings with people who have had episodes or acute mental illness issues my entire life (61 years) and I haven’t experienced to any extent what she is describing. Although it hasn’t always been a walk in the park, you build a tribe and to the next right thing. I don’t agree that mental illness is as taboo in the Church or anywhere else as she portrays. I am sorry for her experience but I think the same things can be said about churches and other illnesses that she is saying about mental illness. This book would have been very helpful in the early 1990s but doesn’t seem as relevant today.

This book is life changing

I found this book from a recommendation In another book “Beauty Marks” by Linda Barrick (another life changing book). Thank you Debra for writing a beautiful book and shedding such a hopeful light on such a painful subject. This book will change your life and it will help you see things the way God is needing you to see them. This book is an absolute must read if you are genuinely ready to heal and listen and move forward with God. I’m so thankful to have found this.

Excellent for betrayal trauma

This book was recommended by my therapist for betrayal trauma for sexual addiction on the part of a religious spouse and it was excellent for having a plan for healing.

very insightful

I gained a new perspective for the challenge we are facing. The information is helpful, talking to others about this struggle has been difficult, hearing others stories makes me realize I am not alone.

Very Religious

I think some chapters were especially good. chapter 7 and 8 especially. however the book at one point said to not label your spouse abusive or narcissist. I got extremely angry at the message given sometimes. I'm not sure I like it or that I would recommend it to others.
