Publisher's summary

Building on the biblical story of Jacob wrestling with God and on the story of her own battle with life-changing disappointment, Benedictine Sr. Joan Chittister explores the landscape of suffering and hope. Meant to help listeners cope with their own suffering and disappointment, this book is, in Sister Joan's own words, "an anatomy of struggle and an account of the way hope grows in us, despite our moments of darkness, regardless of our regular bouts of depression. It is an invitation to look again at the struggles of life in order that we might remember how to recognize new life in our souls the next time our hearts turn again to clay."

Critic reviews

"As ever, Joan Chittister's voice rises up from the struggle to offer a powerful and transforming source of hope!" (Martin Sheen, actor and political activist)
"At a time when the vision and values that define us as a nation seem under siege from all directions, Joan Chittister - mystic and prophet - has given us yet another perspective on holding fast to hope.... What a comfort it is to hear these words as we struggle to make our way in a world that keeps moving away from us." (Sr. Miriam Therese Winter, author, theologian, and songwriter)

Know the enemy. Learn from it.

I know few authors who wrote so succinctly with such keen insight. Joan never fails to mentor my spirit. I'm deeply indebted. This was my 4th iteration of this title. Still dealing its wealth.

inspiring

I rarely read books about spirituality but this book was recommended to me during a time of struggle. The author made the topic of struggle and hope easy to understand, to follow her explanation of the bind between the two, without losing me in theory. I recommend this book to those that find themselves at a loss.

Priceless

Hands down, one of the best books on spirituality I've ever listened to/read. So profoundly wise and helpful, I have two hard copies in addition to the audio. I hate to write vague reviews, but there really are no words to describe the value of this book. If you are struggling -- with anything in your life -- there's something here for you. I've read it several times and use it like an oracle (turn to a page at random for guidance)...I've never been disappointed. If I could only have one book to help me navigate the dark passages of life, this would absolutely be the one.

Wisdom and grace

Definitely life changing. Joan Chittister is quite the spiritual director. Eloquent and graced, wise and blessed.
