Publisher's summary

Jim Hopkinson details a novel way to get the raise you deserve. Using these 10 steps, you will be able to confidently and effectively negotiate your salary. With helpful tips and questions throughout, this book gives readers the tools to conquer "the evil HR lady."

While other books or websites might list a few standard bullet points on the subject from an expert in the HR field, Jim takes a "novel approach," weaving interesting stories, case studies, graphs, humor, and personal experience to make the topic come alive. The book also educates the reader on:

  • Discovering the two simple - but vital - questions you need to answer for success
  • Harnessing your social media network to gather valuable information
  • Mastering successful FBI negotiation techniques to your advantage
  • Creating a one-of-a-kind document to secure the highest salary range
  • Using Jim's "Right back at Ya" Method to regain control of an interview

Excellent advice!

I listened to this book a few months ago and was a little skeptical whether the advice was realistically applicable to real-life situations, but I decided to try.
I was up for my annual review at work, and decided to prepare more thoroughly than usual by supporting the conversation with printed materials.
I had news articles mentioning things I had worked on, screen shots and training material I had used that showed how my work was being used and developed. I had printed some emails illustrating how I had handled tricky situations, especially on issues I had previously had comments about.
I printed material I found showing the average incomes for similar positions as mine showing a spread of which my current income was at the lower end, as I felt my results merited positioning in a higher category than previously.
The end result was that they asked to keep all the printed material I had brought, and asked for some time to reconsider the 5% raise that was on the table. Two weeks later I got a new offer for a 15% raise as a direct result of listening to this book.

Not what I was looking for.

I was looking for a book to help negotiate my current salary, not tips to negotiating salary for a new job. I felt this could have been stated more clearly in the description. Nevertheless, the book does have some interesting tips for those looking to switch companies.

2 Hours of Practical, Powerful Negotiation Tips

I couldn't get the ebook version from where I live, but was glad I found the audiobook version instead. Hearing Jim's natural way of presenting his ideas made it more realistic and comfortable for me to think about salary negotiation. Love the tips, especially the ones based on FBI negotiating techniques. It's almost like he's written the script, and it's just up to you to do your homework and say your lines. Highly recommended.

A must read for anyone that works

The ideas and concepts in this book are simple once you read it. I found several ah ha moments while reading the book. This book will help better prepare you for a job interview. Going in armed with what Jim Hopkinson teaches you should impress the employer. I almost felt like I wish I was going in for an interview so I could try this out. My wife will use what she learned and I know she will get the job. Can't wait for the next book. Thank You.

Too much unnecessary information

Unfortunately there is no meat in this book. The aurthor boosts a great deal about his career. It doesn’t lead to any useful information for the readers. I assume he was trying to show that saleries go up and down. Yet one sentence of that would have sufficed. There was too much unnecessary info! Only got one new idea. It was a disappointment.

Full of great information

Mr. Hopkinson is a great writer and reader. He has taken on an uncomfortable subject of salary negotiation and made the subject interesting. He provides a large cache of ideas on how to sit across the table from your future employer and make sure you get the salary you deserve for the job you are being hired to do. He is light in his approach without lacking the necessary details to make this a worthwhile book for the job seeker.
