Publisher's Summary

One of the most successful coaches in NBA history, Chicago Bulls head coach Phil Jackson provides an inside look at the higher wisdom of teamwork with Sacred Hoops.
A new paradigm of leadership based on Eastern and Native American principles, Jackson's approach flies in the face of the egoistic, winner-take-all attitude that has changed the face of American sports. Rather than winning through intimidation, Jackson - who describes himself as a Zen Christian - stresses awareness, compassion and, most of all, selfless team play.
Filled with stories about Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Toni Kukoc, and other members of the Bulls, Sacred Hoops reveals how Jackson directs his players to act with a clear mind; to respect the enemy and be aggressive without anger or violence; to live in the moment and stay calmly focused in the midst of chaos, so that the "me" becomes the servant of the "we".
In Sacred Hoops, Jackson takes us inside the mind of the thinking man's coach as he builds one of the greatest teams of all time. Not just for sports fans, this inspiring memoir is for anyone interested in the potential of the human spirit.

Good listen, but...

...way better unabridged. I first read Sacred Hoops maybe 5 years ago, and instantly fell in love with both the book and Phil Jackson. When I found it available here on audible (and read by Phil Jackson himself, no less!) I jumped on the purchase. It wasn't until my download was complete and I saw a runtime of less than 2 hours that I realized it's abridged.
It's a great listen full of deep insight, and it's wonderful hearing it in Phil's own voice, but it's missing so many of the vivid and meaningful stories from the full book. I greatly missed the lessons from Phil's time coaching an unorthodox and chronically tardy team in Puerto Rico, or the surprisingly calm picture of how Rodman came to be a Bull, and the tidbit about the league fining Jordan for switching back to #23 after returning from retirement. And these are just a few that I remember after years away from the book.
Bottom line, I do recommend this audiobook, but beg for an unabridged version. Anyone interested would be better served by picking up a copy of the actual book.

Changed me

This book was all I could ask for and more. It was an incredible and detailed timeline of Phil's career and then tied it all in with bonding, friendship, and peace. It changed the way I look at basketball. It is a definite "should read".
