Publisher's summary

Every dog owner knows that along with the joy can come the stress and frustration of behavioral problems, which are expensive to diagnose and treat. Enter Kim Brophey, award-winning canine behavior consultant.

Using cutting-edge research, Brophey has developed a groundbreaking system that allows owners to identify what their dog is struggling with, why, and how they can fix it. Brophey's approach is unlike anything that has been published before and will give dog owners a new understanding of what motivates and affects their dog's behavior. Brophey's innovative technique rethinks the way we categorize dogs, and distills information from over 20 scientific disciplines into four comprehensive elements: learning, environment, genetics, and self. With revolutionary tips for specific dog breeds, this book will change the life of every dog owner and lead to happier human-canine relationships.

Everyone with, or wanting a dog, must read!

This great book covers all aspects that feed into what makes each of our dogs special. It brings together their experiences, environment, and genetics to help us explain common behaviors we see, but also why each dog is an individual. It helps set our expectations that adopting or buying a certain type of dog does not mean that we can (or should) just "train" them to fit the mold we want. They are complicated, just as we are, and there is a lot to consider when looking at each individuals behavior.

As someone who works with dog behavior, this book really helped me see the need of moving from our traditional ABC model to considering all the LEGS as part of that antecedent group.

Truly meet your dog

It's not a how to book, it's learn why your dog behavies the way he does book.

A book I would recomend to anyone choosing a dog for themselves but unsure what to expect from certain breed or dog breeds (beside looks).
Also to every person involved in dog profession - training, sitting, walking, vets,...

The books also covers what dogs nees, how to set an environment for them so every future or current owner can greatly benefit from it.

Excelent flow, fun and easy to understand and an absolute must have for anyone owning or otherwise involved with dogs !

Great at helping you "meet your dog"

I learned a great deal from this book about what motivates my dog to behave as he does and how I can best meet him where he lives. Not a training book per se, although there are a couple of short sentences specifically related to how to get your dog to perform a specific action. This book does a great job of pointing out how dogs have been genetically manipulated by humans to perform very specific roles such as herding, guarding, fighting, hunting, or killing small animals (terriers). It does a good job of pointing out that just because most of us don't need our dogs to perform these jobs doesn't mean that their desire to do what they were bred to do has gone away. Knowing how our dogs were bred and for what purposes can really help us better meet their needs instead of just insisting that they meet ours.

Great book with lots of information and advice

I really enjoyed this book. I have read more about dogs than most people, I find the subject fascinating and want to be the best owner for my furry pal. I really appreciated learning about the different groups of dogs and how their personality is affected by their breed standards. Really valuable advice throughout the book. I read it through once, but will be going back to the sections pertaining my dog and taking notes!

great book for those just starting to learn about the way dogs think

overall I really enjoyed this book. I have read several book on this topic and it is very similar. The only thing I didn't like is the broad generalizations. I have 2 huskies and a husky mix they all have some of thier breed traits but each is completely different.

She does briefly talk about this at the end. I would suggest this book as a great beginning dog psychology type of book. understanding why your dogs do things is so helpful in building a trusting bond with them.

wonderful book for novice and professional owners

The narrator did wonderful reading this book. She kept me engaged the whole time. The book was absolutely wonderful when it comes to explaining the different types of dog breeds, their history, tendencies, trainability, personality etc. The book also covers other things such as puppy hood and much more. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves dogs or is just interested in them. it gives you an insight on why your specific dog might be doing something you don't like and also how to better understand your dog as well.
