Publisher's Summary

Marriage is so much more than a human institution. The Bible teaches that marriage was created by God and reveals an eternal mystery - the mystery of the Gospel. In this way marriage paints a picture of our salvation in and through Jesus Christ.
In the second volume in the Short Studies in Biblical Theology series, Pastor Ray Ortlund traces the Bible's teaching on marriage from Genesis to Revelation - revealing how marriage stands at the center of God's redemptive purposes for the world. Helping us grasp a cosmic vision of this oft-misunderstood institution, this volume honors and exalts marriage as a grand display of the Gospel, offering guidance and hope for our own marriages today.

Inspiring, but non-conventional

Would you try another book from Ray Ortlund and/or Al Kessel?

Not likely. Ray Ortlund has sometimes used a very different way of thinking about the scripture and how to best interpret and relate the message than I would. At first I wanted to delete the book because he was going to far out of what is understood in conventional thought, and he was not even mentioning it to the audience. This concerns me in that maybe some not so discerning readers/listeners might take his words to be more exact rather than hypothetical.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

The most interesting was the numerous examinations on the closeness and intertwined aspect of the one flesh union of man and wife in marriage. I like how he kept coming back to this while following the pattern of scripture.

What aspect of Al Kessel’s performance would you have changed?

Perhaps slowing and pausing slightly during some parts. It seemed to go a bit fast on some of the thought streams. This caused me to pause the book and say, "wait a second, did he say what I thought he said?" Although this could have been alleviated with some writing from the author that is for more of a larger audience and leads people through the thoughts a bit more slowly.

Did Marriage and the Mystery of the Gospel inspire you to do anything?

Yes, it did inspire me, despite the previous mention of disagreement. It inspired me think more highly in taking greater care of my relationship with my wife. For this reason I found it not needful to return the book for a refund.

Any additional comments?

This is part of a series of books from the publisher, Crossway. The first one that I listened to was on "Work", and it was very nicely done. I wish that I would have found this one on "Marriage" to be the same, but Ray Ortlund went to far in some of the earlier aspects of scripture interpretation without the humility of saying what he was doing. By God's grace the book still had an impact on me.

Great book about marriage

If you could sum up Marriage and the Mystery of the Gospel in three words, what would they be?

A must read

What other book might you compare Marriage and the Mystery of the Gospel to and why?

I might compare to the Sacred Marriage: What If God Designed Marriage to Make Us Holy More Than to Make Us Happy? Personally, I think you must read them both because both of them are very important book about marriage.

Have you listened to any of Al Kessel’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

This is the first time I've listened to Al Kessel’s performance. I am really impressed with his performance. The book is already interesting to listening too but his narration make it even better.

Any additional comments?

Falling in love is easy, staying in love is another matter. This book provides the purpose for the life long commitment on marriage that based on biblical truth. I recommend this book to every Christian because it will deepen your understanding about marriage. This book is perfect if you're looking for a guide to help lead you to a better marriage that God wants you to have.
