Publisher's summary

Do your insides jump for joy when you see a perfectly frosted cupcake or cookie? Or do you love the look of violet lavender syrup or a mouthwatering strawberry and lime jam? Or are you more of a savory person and melt when you see a jar of homemade salsa or seasoned nuts with just the right amount of spices?

If food excites you as much as it does me, you just might be a foodie. And in today's food-centered world, there is serious money to be made with your passion.

Food consumption has really changed in the past decade, and now more than ever, people want to know what's in their food, where it came from and who made it. That's bad news for businesses that mass produce food, but great news for those in the cottage food industry.

You see, in the past individuals who wanted to sell food were required to involve the state health inspectors and lease commercial kitchens in order to sell to the public. Obviously, that prevented a lot of people from pursuing their food dreams. But now many states have passed cottage food laws that are designed to give home chefs and bakers the right to produce products from their homes and sell them to the public.

I've opened and closed many businesses in my lifetime, and there's nothing I love more than taking an idea and turning it into a smoothly run, profitable business. And this book was born of that desire.

Where's the PDF???

This book was okay. I am close to starting my own food company and actually after reading this book, I've decided that it isn't worth it to abide by the cottage food laws for the limited revenue and resources that are accessible. Going to a commercial kitchen seems the best option. Also, a lot of the information in this audiobook is best consumed by actually reading. Since the PDF that is referenced multiple times is not available to me, much is lost. I'm not going to listen to the whole thing again to find the bits that are most important.

Motivating

This is a useful book to motivate you to take a serious look at your business dreams. It is exactly what I was hoping the book to be, and was very up-to-date as "upwork" was previously "elance" only until recently. This genre of books are anecdotal, out of date, too long, or very narrow to an author's personal experience. Kerns has done a great job, and this audiobook is a lot like a business course you might take at your local community college (except much cheaper and less time consuming) and it is actionable as promised. I'm considering the other audiobooks in the series to continue to motivate myself out of the IT industry as an employee and step onto the path of self-employment. Keep up the good work! Sincerely, a quarter-life crisis.

Not what was promised

The title of this book should be “recipes for products to sell” not how to start a business. The whole book is just random recipes. Very upsetting.

best information I could've gotten!

I learned so much from this book. I am much more confident now that I have a better understanding of the cottage food industry.

Inspiring - gave me the tools to succeed!

I found this book just in the nick of time. I was on the verge of giving up on my dream to earn a living selling food items I've created for others to enjoy. After listening to Sam Kerns book on How to Start a Home-Based Food business, I literally decided that day to start making my dreams come true. The book was so complete and helpful I actually started my own business the day after I finished the book. Highly recommended to anyone seeking to start a home based food business. Even for those who think they already know it all!
