Publisher's summary

Belva Plain captured readers' hearts with her first novel, Evergreen, which Delacorte published more than 30 years ago. It topped the New York Times best-seller list for 41 weeks and aired as an NBC-TV miniseries. In total, more than 20 of her books have been New York Times best sellers.

Before becoming a novelist, Belva Plain wrote short stories for many major magazines, but taking care of a husband and three children did not give her the time to concentrate on the novel she had always wanted to write. When she looked back and said she didn't have the time, she felt as though she had been making excuses. In retrospect, she said, "I didn't make the time." But, she reminded us, during the era that she was raising her family, women were supposed to concentrate only on their children. Today 30 million copies of her books are in print.

A Barnard College graduate who majored in history, Belva Plain enjoyed a wonderful marriage of more than 40 years to Irving Plain, an ophthalmologist. Widowed for more than 25 years, Ms. Plain continued to reside in New Jersey, where she and her husband had raised their family and which was still home to her nearby children and grandchildren until her death in October 2010.

absolutely the best

I have used his audio cassettes judiciously in alcohol and drug counseling with adults. Bradshaw recommends that clients have 1 year of recovery before starting this work. My setting does not allow for this and after careful thought and input from fellow counselors I will allow clients to listen to Home Coming. CAUTION: Any therapist using these tapes should have already worked through their issues before using tapes to help others work through their issues.

Bradshaw does excellent job of explaining developmental stages and how stages tend to repeat themselves. He explains that if we were not successful in working through a stage, then later on in life when stage is repeated, we are apt to not be successful again. Much of this has to do with our inner child being hurt. This inner child tends to act out (or act in) in various ways, well into our adulthood and can affect our relationships with other.

Bradshaw addresses three stages: infancy, toddler and pre-schooler. After discussing a stage, he will use guided imagery to take the listener back to that stage and work through difficult experiences. He also uses NLP neurolinguistic programing to help clients reprograming their thinking.

I've had remarkable results and highly recommend thier use with supervision of a therapist/counselor.

One final note: the CD versions do not break at the same points as in his cassettes and would recommend that user re-record the audios so that they break in less akward places.

Not the "read-a-long"

This is not a read-a-long as I expected, but more like an accompanying CD-audio that should have came with the book. Missing integral parts that the book helps to explain, but if you have both you are good to go. On the audio John Bradshaw helps one to enter a meditation state. Works wonders.

Outstanding

I don't know what audible tape the previous reviewer listened to (1 star by "subterfuge") but it wasn't this one. No Christian slant here, except to refer to how some religious upbringing can negatively affect our inner child.

The author swings between recordings infront of a live audience to personal meditations. A wonderful speaker and very convincing.

A useful tape for anyone, not just those with extreme childhood experiences.

Transformative

Overall I can't complain about my family or my education. My parents did the best they could, and avoided mistakes other parents did. However, the problem is not what your parents did, but how you perceived it and how it ultimately affected you. This program, in its simplicity, allowed me to have many "ah ha!" moments that explained some of my most deeply rooted behaviors and responses. I don't think it can replace the work with a therapist for deep traumas, but for sure it can help you grt an hindsight on your own development.

Great program to start healing with

I just finished my first round of this audio book and it is fantastic. I really feel empowered. I have learned that I can go back and safely do the work I need to get on with life and being a real parent toy great kids who need me much. Get this program and do it. You will be who you were meant to be. Champion your inner child and get strong.

Thanks John Bradshaw.

Developmental Tasks

Homecoming. narrated by John Bradshaw who wrote the book was a Five star listening experience for me. I always appreciate an audio book so much more when it is 'coming from the author's voice.

In. Homecoming I first want to. bring to your awareness that the audio version is abridged.
John Bradshaw takes us back to our childhood's and we explore three developmental stages.
Very often during listening he tells us to pause the audio and write with our non dominant hand.

If these three stages of early development didnt take place, work with a therapist can help us to complete them. So we can't go back and relive our childhoods to do these developments right. We are not doomed. There is hope. We nust need to do the work with a therapist.

NOT JOHN BRADSHAW'S BOOK!!!!

The audio is NOT John Bradshaw's book titled 'Homecoming: Reclaiming and Championing Your Inner Child'.
The description and reviews ARE FOR John Bradshaw's book, but the audio isn't. I am extremely upset, as I was expecting a self-help book [recommended to me by my therapist].
