A good starting point with some intermediate tips

This is not a comprehensive guide from start to finish on writing your first novel. What this book contains is sources of inspiration, ideas for generating stories, ways to commit to the writing process, tips for editing and publishing, and lots of other great information.

If you're expecting a step by step checklist then you might be disappointed, but if you're looking for inspiration to get started writing and help on how to do so this might be the one that pushes you into putting pen to paper.

The Title Is Confusing But The Content Is Not

✍️ The title is a bit confusing to me but I found this book to be an encyclopedia for a writer.

Some of the highlights:
1. Short, focused ;chapters
2. Summary and exercises at the end of each chapter
3. Glossary

I found that speeding up the audio made the narration better.

This is the 3rd or 4th book that I have listened to about writing and/or audiobook creation in the past 4 or 5 months. I think it is helpful and may be inspiring for those who are considering writing a book.

I recommend listening to this with a pen and notebook (or the electronic version) in hand to jot down notes.

Great Read

From Story Idea to Reader was a great helpful idea for any aspiring author. Patsy Collins and Rosemary J. Kind did a great job of giving authors tips and ideas I think this is a great book for anyone who aspires to write a book.

What did you love best about From Story Idea to Reader?

I like the straightforward manner that the information was presented. It was thorough without being overly padded. Many books like this will repeat themselves in different ways to get the page count up.

What does Charles "CW" Hall bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

He did a solid job reading the book. His pacing and modulation were comfortable for listening.

Any additional comments?

I think that the book could be improved by including a PDF with the exercises etc. It is difficult to transcribe this information when driving, exercising, and doing other tasks - the way I listen.

I found this to be helpful in looking at the everyday world as a source of inspiration.

The text seems to read more like an interview you would see in a magazine or newspaper. At first it was a little hard to follow until I realized this. After that the information was very good.

Helpful, more so for UK listeners

This book has a lot of helpful tips for beginners to story craft. While some of the information is UK specific like names of contests or publisher names there is still lots to take away from this guide to write your story.

Rosemary and Patsy write conversationally and the narrator does well in carrying that on to the listener and makes it a quick and easy listen.

Good Advice for Writers

I found this to be full of easy-to-follow advice and exercises. I especially thought the exercises were what made the whole thing worth the listen and creditworthy. I do feel like parts of it would have been better in print, but having a notebook handy while listening would optimal to get the most out of this listen.

I imagine it's hard to put together any kind of instructional that can appeal to a wide range of people without condescending to some and going over the heads of others. I thought a couple spots were a bit tedious, or "Let me explain this very common sense idea to you using small words." However, it wasn't enough to make me not recommend the book overall. I think this can be very helpful to someone who is considering trying their hand at writing.

The narration is clear and read well. It is very much a reading rather than a performance as it is a "how-to" which is obviously written by 2 women and read by one man. However, there is nothing lost in the conversion from print to audio, and CW Hall did a great job.
