Publisher's summary

Boys become men in much the same way across cultures, by integrating, through experience, each of five messages: Life is hard; You are not that important; Your life is not about you; You are not in control; You are going to die. Our culture has done everything in its power, it seems, to move away from this ancient wisdom. Men are lured away to dominate through money, sex, power, consumerism—and never really become men.

In this audiobook, spiritual master Richard Rohr reintroduces us to male wisdom in a way that will engage anyone who is a man, who is mentoring a young man, or who wants to understand men better, in a language being used in retreats around the globe.

Pro maleness without any anti woman.

Spiritual and practical at the same time if you are not on a spiritual search right now. Fr. Rohr draws heavily on the practicality of Jung and ups the game. It’s ok to be a man with a mans behaviors and urges but to be a fully integrated man you need to not only be a warrior but also a wise man/king/lover etc. He talks about how men can become more gentle in old age and women find strength and if they both do this with love and properly they both come out better (If not - midlife crisis and the death of relationships).

ground breaking

I've not only learned about male initiation spirituality , but also about how to engage in a spiritual life. This is targeted not only for catholics or Christians, but all who want to pursue God in their lives.

Interesting

I get the feeling that there are some motives underlying this book. A few of the main arguments against Catholicism and Christianity are undermined, or at least the attempt seems to be there. That is Rohr is extraordinarily open minded and seems to be very aware of Jungian psychology and its idea of the shadow and how that plays into being a religious zealot. He is going right for the heart of the attack that Catholicism is too ritualistic, and is saying actually it is not ritualistic enough, or rather not ritualistic enough in the way of initiation. Simply put he is widening the net a bit which isn't necessarily bad at all, humanity has forgot some things.

Wow

Written from within the mind and heart of a prophet, this book is one of the best I’ve ever read. Fr. Richard is way ahead of time. Whoever has ears, let him hear. Blessings:)

Good for the soul

I must admit, at moments, this was deeper then I could receive. I believe, however, that I've gotten to a place in my life where I understand that God is graciously slowly opening my mind and heart to His truths. So with that, I pressed on and I'm glad I did. Much like when I was a child, I didn't always understand what the pastor was say, but ever now and then, something made sense. I believe that is God. To be clear, with this book, it wasn't every now and then. This book is packed full of easy to digest truths that every man needs to hear. Listen to this book, consider its call to reclaim your manhood and press on. I don't know you, but I'm praying for you. You don't know me, but I could use your prayers as well.

If you're ready for it, it's life-changing

Where does Adam's Return rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I've listened to dozens and dozens of audiobooks, and this one ranks among the top-five, easily.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Adam's Return?

This question is not really applicable, IMO.

Which character – as performed by Richard Rohr – was your favorite?

These questions do not apply to this book...

If you were to make a film of this book, what would the tag line be?

N/A

Any additional comments?

This is a great book and Richard Rohr narrates his work extremely well. I wish he performed more of his titles! He is an excellent author that writes in ways that penetrate into comprehension and relativity across different levels of intellect and that breaks down constructs of categorization that have became barriers to deeper understanding... let's just say you should read this book, and any others of R. Rohr's that you can get your hands on!

Great Reflection, Little Direction

This book did a great job at overviewing male initiation in different cultures, bringing to light the positive and negative aspects of each. I did feel, like similar to the main issue with today's world, that I now had much more information on the topic, and much less wisdom. I found myself wanting more direction and how to integrate these lessons, but not finding them here. Maybe that wasn't the intent of the book, although I wish it had been.
