Publisher's summary

In This Common Secret, Dr. Susan Wicklund chronicles her emotional and dramatic twenty-year career on the front lines of the abortion war. Growing up in working class, rural Wisconsin, Wicklund had her own painful abortion at a young age. It was not until she became a doctor that she realized how many women shared her ordeal of an unwanted pregnancy - and how hidden this common experience remains.

This is the story of Susan's love for a profession that means listening to women and helping them through one of the most pivotal and controversial events in their lives. Hers is also a calling that means sleeping on planes and commuting between clinics in different states - and that requires her to wear a bulletproof vest and to carry a .38 caliber revolver. This is also the story of the women whom Susan serves, women whose options are increasingly limited.

Through these intimate, complicated, and inspiring accounts, Wicklund reveals the truth about the women's clinics that anti-abortion activists portray as little more than slaughterhouses for the unborn. As we enter the most fevered political fight over abortion America has ever seen, this raw and powerful memoir shows us what is at stake.

Gripping

Any additional comments?

I have hundreds of audiobooks in my library. This might've been the best. Really well-written and captivating. Makes me want to volunteer at a local clinic

women's rights vs patriarchal society

I came from a country where abortion is totally banned. I thought everything is easy in a country where abortion is totally legal.
But I was wrong. I realized how screwed up this patriarchal society we have, that basically women have no rights compared to a mere tissue.
I cannot forget how she said that maybe one of my family member, close to me like my friends or relatives had abortion. Yes, despite our country's total ban on it, my sister, my aunts, my girl friends had abortion. And they had it undercover, in a crude way, that almost cost their lives. How I wish we had access to safe abortion because like it or not, some women will do it. At least let them do it safely.
Also I cannot forget about their encounter with the aunt and uncle and how the girl said this piece of tiasue is more important than the living woman. I am deeply awakened, disappointed and angered to the society, especially the society I lived in, where someone with a deadly pregnancy is still encouraged to continue it because terminating it will cost the life of the tissue, but they don't care about the life of the living woman.
This book make me hate the hypocrite pro life people even more.
