Publisher's summary

Chances are, you've already had run-ins with your Outer Child - the self-sabotaging, bungling, and impulsive part of your personality. This misguided, hidden nemesis blows your diet, overspends, and ruins your love life. Your Outer Child acts out and fulfills your legitimate childlike needs and wants in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and in counterproductive ways: It goes for immediate gratification and the quick fix in spite of your best-laid plans.

Now, in a revolutionary rethinking of the link between emotion and behavior, veteran psychotherapist Susan Anderson offers a three-step program to tame your Outer Child's destructive behavior. This dynamic, transformational set of strategies - action steps that act like physical therapy for the brain - calms your Inner Child, strengthens your Adult Self, releases you from the self-blame and shame at the root of Outer Child issues, and paves new neural pathways that can lead to more productive behavior. The result is happiness, fulfillment, self-mastery, and self-love.

Her voice made me cringe.

Maybe the book is not as bad, however, the narrator's voice made me cringe every time I tried to listen. She has the fakest and most unemotional voice which made the book unlistenble to me.

I really don't like this book

I do not like the "outer child" and "inner child" reference. It not only strikes me as wrong, it IS wrong. Instead of outer child say "conscious" and inner child say "subconscious". Now learn about that. You suddenly will not try to blame anything on any part of you. You can change your subconscious, and it is much more powerful than your conscious. However this book does not tell you how to do that.

insightful

if you are interested in understanding the mechanisms behind certain human behaviors this is one of the better resources I have found. There are exercises to help you dialogue with those parts of yourself that have been neglected and forge a path towards healing. If you're looking to raise your emotional IQ this will help you on that path. As with all self-help books you must do the work to see results. I recommend having a go to person to help you stay accountable to your goals of reversing harmful patterns of behavior into healthy ones. You do not need to be a student of psychology to understand the bulk of this book, though there is science based evidence to support themes and ideas. Overall I recommend highly.

Great Book- Do Not Like Narration

Great take on the subject matter. Bought the paperback as well. Got the Audible version to listen to on my commute. I don’t mean to offend the narrators on Audible, but I wish there were more easy going storytellers and fewer narrators who sound like they are reading for a commercial. The style and tone don’t fit the subject matter and kind of makes you tune out. I’ve found this on several books lately. I want to hear a storyteller, not a commercial.

Narrator

Narrators voice was a huge distraction. Her voice changes when speaking for someone’s story sounded plastic and fake. The book is wonderful. I’ll read it again. Even if I have to endure the narrators voice.

Great tools!

I had some great takeaways that immediately helped me shift. Will continue to practice these tools. I feel like this book has something for everyone. Maybe not every chapter but look for the area you need help with.

The Adult Self, The Inner-Child, The Outer- Child

I learned about a part of the psyche, termed The Outer-Child, and how it reacts to The Inner-Child's raw emotions. I learned that the Adult Self can referee between the two in order to better parent the Inner-Child.
